Zurich Man Gets Stephen Contract
For Repairs to Mud Creek Drain
Stephen Township council ac-
cepted the tender of Bill Law-
rence, of Zurich,, for repairs to
Mud Creek Municipal Drain.
Lawrence's price of $398 was
the lowest of two bids.
The open drain will be clean-
ed out for a distance of 2400
feet southwards from Highway
83. Work is expected to begin
as soon as weather will permit.
Council will also give some
thought to possible dumping lo-
cations in the township for ex-
cavation from construction on
the Crediton road. Although
contracts will probably be let
for the hauling away process,
council feels the successful ap-
plicant may appreciate council's
direction concerning the avaiI-
ability of not too distant spots
for dumping.
Work on the five mile stretch
from the eastern limits of Credi-
ton to Khiva scheduled for con-
struction this year is expected
to begin about May 15. Tenders
will be called sometime in
April.
The second stage of the pro-
ject calls for the construction
of the remainder of the devel-
opment road from Khiva to
Highway 81. There is still no
date set for the commencement
of that phase.
The total cost of both seg-
ments of the plan has been esti-
mated at $500,000. That figure
includes curbs, gutters and
drainage work in the village of
Crediton.
Costs Too High
A bridge on Concession 22,
known as the Mollard Line,
should be rebuilt but council
is giving second thought to •the
matter since construction of a
new bridge an the site has been
estimated at $24,000.
Reeve Glenn Webb said costs
were hiked because a soil test
in the area showed footings
would have to be dug much
deeper than ordinarily.
He said the present bridge is
too narrow and the butternents
are cracked, but if reconstruc-
tion went ahead, "it would put
quite a hole in our budget".
Reeve Webb reported to his
council that representatives
from East Williams, Stephen,
Bosanquet and Grand Bend at-
tended a meeting with Minister
of Energy and Resources Si-
monette while in Toronto last
week.
The minister told the assem-
bly at the meeting there would
be no increase in government
assistance on the Parkhill Dam
project. He said engineers
from his department would take
another look at what the dam
will provide and if it can be
completed in stages.
Councillor Ed Hendrick said
things are quiet at the local
level concerning the dam which
has raised so much controversy
in district municipalities.

Winter Weather
Snarls Activity
Cold, bleak stormy weather
bit the entire region of southern
Ontario last week -end in one of
the worst storms of the season
and probably since 1954.
Weather forecasts Wednesday
night cautioned listeners, "You
ain't seen nothing yeat" and by
Thursday morning, a howling
blizzard had dropped from eight
to ten inches of snow on this
area.
High school buses transported
students to SHDHS Thursday
morning but the fear of impas-
sable roads by afternoon
prompted officials to close the
school before noon. The were
returned to their homes and the
local secondary school remained
closed all day Friday.
Most public schools in the
area were closed Friday. Exe-
ter, Grand Bend and all Stephen
elementary schools decided to
give children a holiday as blow-
ing snow and freezing temper-
atures made driving unsafe and
walking treacherous..
Drifts as high as six feet were
whipped against fences and
buildings and across rural roads.
Plows and snowblowers were
pressed into round-the-clock
service to clear roads and lanes
to permit emergency travel.
Police warned all motorists to
stay off roads unless driving
was absolutely necessary and
many employers told their hired
help to remain at home.
Digging Out
The slow process of digging
out began Friday afternoon as
winds subsided and the sun
emerged.
Residents poked their heads
Mrs. Mary Glen
Funeral service for Mrs. Mary
Glen, 74, of RR 5, Clinton, wid-
ow of Edward C. Glen, was held
from Beattie funeral hone, Clin-
ton, Wednesday, March 3, with
burial in Clinton cemetery.
Mrs: Glen, the former Mary
Alice MacLaren, of Hensall,
passed away suddenly at Clin-
ton Public Hospital on Monday.
Surviving are one son, W.
Robert, RR 3; Clinton; a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Chester (Alice) Nei-
lans, London; two brothers, R.
Y. MacLaren, Hensall; W. A.
MacLaren, Goderich.
cautiously outdoors to estimate
the job ahead. Snow shovels
and snow removal equipment
worked steadily to move mounds
of snow from one spot to an-
other.
In Dashwood, a snow blower
was raised onto the roof the the
planing mill to remove a
weighty abundance of snow.
Employees found the machine
a back -saver and said it fit
easily into the bucket of a bull-
dozer which lifted the blower
to the roof.
About the only people who
were not disturbed by the heaps
of snow everywhere were the
children, High firm banks made
excellent foundations for snow
