Station and network officals are busy invading California to see pilots of TV shows which will make up the schedule for 1965-66. Over the past few weeks it has been disturbing to learn that many of the cur- rent TV shows will not be with us next season. We understand there is a large repertoire of pilots from which to choose. Once again, opposing net- works will try to knock Ed Sul- livan from his high -rating posi- tion. ABC will try it with the much-discussed new series "The FBI Story". She died last year after 20 years of perfect marriage. We knew her illness was in- curable and we had many talks about things I would not have had the courage to bring up: her funeral arrangements, for instance. She made me prom- ise that I would remarry, both for my own sake and for the children. I can hardly reconcile myself to any loss. My jobs keeps me busy daytimes. but the nights are 40 hours long. How does one look for a new partner — or even begin to want to? At present I can see nothing but darkness in the future. Be sure you are pre- paring them for the idea of an- other mother. When you are back on a more even keel, a little light will break. Never expect to com- pare a second mate with your first. Merely hope that a second mature companionship can hold its own strong and enduring values, which indeed it can. DEAR DORIS—Is it improper fc r the guest to leave a tip for the waitress when you've been invited out to dinner? For example: a friend took my husband and me to dinner last night. Upon leaving, my husband also left a tip on the table. Right or wrong? EMBARRASSED DEAR EMBARRASSED — Wrong. This would look like a criticism of your host's gener- osity in theme tip he gave. DEAR DORIS—I love my boy friend very much. We are both 18 and he is the only boy I ever went out with. But now this other boy keeps asking me out. I know if I go, Tole will want to break up. I don't want to lose Tom but I'd like to go out with the other boy just the sane. It .seems like whenever we talk about it we end up having a fight. UNHAPPY DEAR UNHAPPY — Once there was a dog with a bone who looked at his reflection in a pond. He saw another bone there and went after that. And lost both. If you think Tom should be okaying your dates with anyone you take a fancy to think again. Be brave enough to break off with him if you have honest doubts. "ro In Trouble — With your precarious health, it is twice as important for you to come out of hiding and seek medical help. Don't let precious months go by while you skimp on food and live in fear. A lack of good prenatal care doubles your chances of prematurity and adds to the risk of your own health and the baby's life. To Worried Friend — When Mom and Dad fight, the little pitchers get upset inside, even if they say nothing. Bribes and other attempts to win a child's loyalty will only .further con. fuse him, as he belongs to both parents and needs to love them both. Even if they can't agree with each other. Hetherington said in his address to the Children's • Aid Society in Goderich that the "shunting off" of aged people to institutions, however comfortable, is no substitute for the family life they prefer, and is a "retrograde step" in Cana- dian civilization. He urged people to give this matter serious consideration, "because in another 20 years your children will be packing you off to such places". "About two generations ago," his honour said, "people, old and destitute began to be sent to institutions the county provided, known as poor houses. "As civilization got a little kindlier, we began to realize that the people who went there had been good .citizens, but through hard luck or sickness or disaster lost their money.
