Canadian social worker Doris Clark invites you to write
her about your problem. She answers letters of general
interest in this column but can't undertake personal replies.
DEAR DORIS----My daughte
is 17. When she was 14 sh
fell in love with a boy fou
years older than her. I though
I was doing the right thing by
not letting her go steady until
she was 16, but by that time
he was married to another girl
You see, that other girl got
pregnant and she blamed this
boy. They went into court, he
offered to pay the cost and give
her a certain amount of money,
but her mother forced them to
get married. Now they are sep-
arated. He says that the baby
is not his, and she admitted it
in court.
He says he is still in love with
my slaughter and they are going
together.
Now he plans to get a divorce
and marry my daughter in two
years. She is so much in love
she can't see straight. What
can I do?
BAFFLERS
DEAR BAFFLED—Let's face
facts: Your daughter is dating
a married man. He still sees
and supports his wife and one
child. He let himself be pushed
into marriage with a girl he did
not love, on a trumped up ac-
cusation.
r young people of her acquain•
e Lance,
The divorce is only an idea
right now; with its actual rea-
lization in great question. This
kind of promise is made far
oftener than it is kept.
You were right to object to
steady dating at 14: and unless
your daughter can show a more
adult approach, I'd guess she is
still unable to choose wisely.
The young man is merely using
her, and is in a perfect position
to take advantage of her.
Don't nag. Show her this let-
ter. And encourage her to pur-
sue new interests with other
DEAR DORIS — Could you
please tell me if a pensioner
can continue to draw the pen-
sion pay while on vacation in
Britain? If so, for how long
could he stay away and still
receive the allowance?
PENSIONER
DEAR PENSIONER—Yes. As
long as he likes, once he has
qualified for it through length
of residence ill Canada and has
begun receiving it.
DEAR DORIS — Could you
give me any information re-
garding ways in which 1 could
strengthen my eyes? I am near-
sighted, and minus my glasses
I am practically blind. How-
ever, my appearance is much
better without then.
Is there any type of food you
could recommend that might
help me?
Please do not tell me to find
a pair of rims that will suit my
face, because I definitely would
like to get completely rid of my
glasses, if that is possible.
FOUR EYES
DEAR FOUR EYES—My eye
consultant says there is no
physical way to remedy your
particular eye difficulty, which
is related to the curve of your
eyeball- No food, no eye gym-
nastics can alter what nature
started you off with.
But here's good news: your
kind of nearsightedness is cor-
rected wonderfully by contact
lenses. Well worth saving up
for and going through the stages
of learning to wear them

Clinton Man Digs
His Private Lake
A farm operation with a dif-
ference has been undertaken
by Bill Chowan, Clinton. Bill
has built a late that will cover
over seven acres of what used
to be waste land.
Building one's own private
lake isn't as expensive as one
would imagine, according to
Mr. Chowan. So far, the hire
of two bulldozers and a scraper
were the moore costly items
but the venture has required
many hours of back -breaking
labor by the enterprizing young
insurance salesman.
Werk began this year and has
already surpassed expectations.
The water in the lake is now
about 11 feet deep and rising
steadily at about a quarter inch
per day. The supply of water
comes from the drainage from
about 100 acres of land plus
several natural springs. Under
the direction of an engineer
from the department of agricul-
ture, a 20 -foot clay core dam
was constructed and a weed con-
trol drain was installed. This
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1164
drain allows about six feet of
water to be taken off the lake
to allow the removal of weeds
from the bottom before they
can decay and contaminate the
water, The lake bottom is part
clay and partly sandy clay.
It is estimated that the lake
will contain some 22,000,000
gallons of good clear water
when it reaches capacity but
when Mr. Chowan first began
the project, he had no .idea that
his scheme would grow to that
size. He discovered, however,
that in order to assure unpol-
luted water, the lake would have
to be large enough to create
waves which would in turn put
purifying oxygen into the water.
To date, a tiny harbor has
been dug which will provide
clocking space for the Chowan
boats. But in the future, the
entire area will be beautified
and crowned by a new home
on the hill overlooking the
peaceful inland lake,
"It is simply a crazy under-
taking that started to grow and
grow," explains Mr. Chowan,
the son of Mrs. Florence Elliott,
secretary -treasurer of the Hur-
on County Federation of Agri-
culture.
But you can bet that the
people in the area of.Clinton
will take great pride in the
Chowan Lake. And Mrs. Chow-
an and her three daughters will
feel like queens in their home
on the lake that Daddy built.
