United Church Women, I3nit
4. November meeting was held
in United Church Thursday,
November 5. Mrs. E. T. Rowe
president, and Mrs. Wilbert
Dilling were in charge.
The worship service was con-
ducted by Mrs. James McAllis-
ter using the theme "Envy"
A Scripture reading by Mrs.
Jarvis Horton gave a vivid de-
scription of what envy can do.
Mrs, McAllister presented the
meditation. In her • talk she
said in every case envy brings
destruction and death.
"Let us love excellence for
its own sake," she continued.
"Let us be thankful for our
mercies and never envy those
we love."
As a special feature, recorded
vocal music from Trinidad and
Brazil was enjoyed.
The mission study on Brazil
was presented by a panel in -
eluding Mrs. Elgin Rowcliffe,
Mrs. Ernest Chipchase, Mrs.
Leona Parke, with Mrs. Rowe
as leader. - Most Canadians
know less about Latin America
than about any other part of
the world, and Brazil is the
largest country in Latin Amer-
ica. It has a population four
times as large a Canada and
has been a mission field for
several centuries, Several of
United Church missionaries are
at work there and still hall the
people there can neither read
or write. It was stressed that
Brazil is a nation in search of
its soul.
Mrs. James McAllister pre-
sided for the business and read
a thank you note from Mrs.
Edith ?McLellan, of Five Oaks,
near Paris, acknowledging the
gift sent to her. Mrs. W. B.
Cross read an encouraging fi-
nancial statement.
The semi-annual bale will be
packed Tuesday, November 17.
Clothing is to be left in the
church before that date.
The special project, "Our
Christmas Stocking", will be
begun and articles are to be in
at the December meeting. A
bazaar on November 28 has
Unit 4 in charge of the tea
room, attic treasures and can-
dy. An SOS has gone out for
attic treasures.

Television Views
by William Whiting
Bolstered by the greatest
array of manpower and elec-
tronic equipment in its history,
television rose to the immense
challenge of meaningful U.S.
election -night c o v era g e and
brought off its assignment with
accuracy, speed and a deep-seat-
ed sense of responsibility.
CBS did the best job of re-
porting. NBS's team of Hunt-
ley -Brinkley made several er-
rors, and no attempt was made
to correct them. ABC did a
good jonb of interviewing inn -
portant people and keeping
their viewers up-to-date by su-
per -imposing latest figures at
the bottom of the screen.
CBC's coverage was good.
CTV used Larry Henderson at
11 p.m. for a special report,
and we can only ask, "why?"
Peter Sellers and one of the
most impressive casts ever as-
sembled for a televisiondrama-
tic program will star in the
first of a series of four special
programs based on the. United
Nations activities, on ABC, De-
cember 28, at 9:30. It's titled
"Carol for Another Christmas"
and in addition to Sellers, there
is Ben Gazzara, Peter Fonda,
Sterling Hayden, Pat Hingle,
Steve Lawrence, Percy Rodri-
guez, Eva Marie Saint, James
Shiget and Robert Shaw.

Everyone Welcome
essary for those who occupy
their time in gardening on small
plots of land which also gives
them fair returns for their
labor.
All of that takes up the spring
days.
They then look forward to
the warm summer days with an
occasional warm rain to give
he necessary moisture to push
ahead the seeds which were
planted. After a certain lapse
of time, those seeds which were
planted in the spring days had
grown to full maturity and fin-
ally the hot summer days had
quietly 'ripened them and they
are ready for to be harvested
and prepared for the market.
All becomes something of the
past when only the stocks re-
mains to decay.
All of that brings us nearer
to the beginning of the autumn
season, thence to the midway
part which is in this , present
month of November.
This month has much to of-
fer in the way of changeable
weather which at times• is dis-
i
agreeable to all. It is also the
month when we can expect
snowfall to cover the ground
accompanied by high winds
causing blizzards and at times
causing destruction to property
and sometimes causing death
by accident during its passing,
A11 of that means the passing
of spring, summer and enter-
ing into the autumn season.
And again when we look back
to the previous months of spring
and summer seasons when na-
ture greeted us with beautiful
sunshine, when flowers of all
colors were pouring out their
blossoms, and all of the scen-
eries were also giving us the
full meaning of nature to give
us new hope from day to day,
it is then that we realize that
all of that is beyond human
power, therefore reminding us
that all is the work of a Su-
preme Power.
The month of this passing
November will be no exception
from others. It wil play its role
while passing on. Throughout
its length, there will be pleas-
ant autumn days mixed in.
There will be incidents to give
us memories of its passing, this
autumn month of November.
