PLANTING TIPS
Coniferous evergreens can be
tr„isplanted successfully dur-
ing early fall, say horticultur-
ists with the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture. Decidu-
ous broad-leaved trees and
shrubs are generally best trans-
planted in spring but many of
them may be transplanted in
fall after the leaves have drop-
ped. However, birch, beech,
poplar, willow and silver maple
must be transplanted in spring.
Dig• the holes wider and
deeper than the spread of the
roots or size of the ball of roots.
This allows good topsoil mixed
with organic natter such as
well -rotted manure or peat to
be worked in around the tree
and thus encourages the devel-
opment of new roots.

Fame Buys Plant
Near. Burlington
Farmers' Allied Meat Enter-
prises Co-operative Limited pur-
chased, last week, all of the
shares of F. W. Fearman Co.
Ltd., .neat processors, of Burl-
ington.
This announcement was made
by the president, C. W. McInnis,
at a meeting of the County
Fanie committee chairmen held
August 29, at the head office in
Toronto.
Fame took possession on Mon-
day, August 31, at 11:00 a.m,,
and began operations of the
plant as a totally owned sub-
sidiary of the Fame Co-opera-
tive without interruption in
production.
The Fearman trade mark will
be used on the line of products
Set the tree at the sante depth
as it grew previously. The soil
should be filled in and at the
same time the tree should be
moved slightly forwards and
backwards to allow the soil to
settle among the roots. Then
tramp the soil firmly,
Balled and burlapped ever-
greens should be set deep
enough so that the ball of roots
is just covered with new soil.
Do not remove the burlap, but
when the soil is filled in cut it
loose and fold back. Burlap
deteriorates rapidly with the
roots growing through it
Af ter transplanting, trees
should be staked securely until
they are well established. Fin-
ally, the area around the roots
must be thoroughly soaked to
prevent drying out.

The warm, spicy fragrance of
freshly made pickles is one of
the most inviting smells of late
summer. During August, On-
tario -grown cucumbers are plen-
tiful and just right for pickling,
For firm, crisp pickles use
freshly picked cucumbers and
' keep them chilled until they are
put in the brine.
Crisp, colorful appetizing
pickles are the delight of every
homemaker. Here are some
hints from the foods depart-
ment at Macdonald Institute,
Guelph, for making prize-win-
ning pickles:
Do not use free-flowing io-
dized salt in place of pickling
salt, Free-flowing salt contains
starch which makes pickle
brine cloudy and helps the
growth of unwanted microor-
ganisms.
Alum is used for crispness.
Add about 1 teaspoon alum for
every four quarts of liquid.
Copper kettles should not be
used for pickling. The green
color which copper gives to
pickles is harmful.
Bread and Butter Pickles
This recipe makes crisp, thin-
ly sliced pickles with a spicy
sweet flavor, And it is so easy;
there is no overnight waiting.
Just slice the cucumbers, soak
for three hours, simmer for a
few minutes and then seal in
jars.
6 quart basket of cucumbers,
about 1 inch or smaller in
