40 YEARS AGO
MAY, 1924
The trustees of the village of
Zurich have purchased a new
line of water hose which con-
sists of 100 feet, which will be
used for the fire department.
William F. Braun, of Zurich,
is moving his household effects
to the town of Forest, where he
is establishing a plumbing busi-
ness.
Mr. P. Ravelle has been ap-
pointed as mail courier for RR
3, Zurich, and will commence
his duties immediately. He has
purchased a new Ford runabout
car from Cook Bros. in Hensall.
Dr. G. L. Smith, of Hensall,
has disposed of his dental prac-
tice to Dr. Knapp, of Toronto,
and he will now return to Chi-
cago.
John Steacey, of the Sterling
Bank in Hensall, is at present
on vacation, and his position is
being filled by a Mr. 'Sellers.
Ward Fritz is at Dashwood
this week taking stock at the
hardware business he recently
purchased from Restemayer &
Kleinstiver.
The business men in the vil-
lage of Dashwood have agreed
to observe every Thursday af-
ternoon as .a half holiday for
the summer months.
25 YEARS AGO
MAY, 1939
On Monday evening the chil-
dren
hildren of Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Kalbf1eisch, Hay Township,
gathered at their home to ob-
serve their 51st wedding anni-
versary.
The easterly part of the house
owned by Mr. and Mrs. Norman
Gascho in Zurich is being reno-
vated to accommodate a mil-
linery business for Miss Anna
Datars.
Mr. E. H. Edigoffer, the new
cobbler for the village of Zur-
ich, is about ready to open his
shop for business. He is a shoe
maker from early days, and is
quite experienced at the trade.
Miss Doreen Farquhar, who
has been the book-keeper for
Bonthron and Drysdale for the
past number of years, has re-
signed her position since she
plans on becoming a bride this
month.
The school in Hensall has re-
opened this week after being
closed for some time owing to
an outbreak of scarlet fever in
the district.
A very pretty wedding was
solemnized at the Lutheran
Church in Desboro when Milton
.Oesch, of Zurich, and Lenita
Minke, of near Chesley, were
married by Rev. Albert Deters.
Mr. Ed Weltin, of Zurich, had
the misfortune last evening to
have a large hole burned in the
roof of his blacksmith shop.
15 YEARS AGO
MAY, 1949
Larry Jones, four-year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Jones,
Hensall, suffered a fractured
right shoulder and facial Injur-
ies when he fell from a milk
wagon.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tudor have
moved their ladies' wear store
in Hensall across the street into
the new building erected by Ed
Fink.
Plans are being finalized for
the visit of Prime Minister
Louis St. Laurent to Zurich on
June 3. He will have lunch at
St. Peter's Parish Hall, St.
Joseph.
A public meeting was held in
the Zurich Town Hall last night,
in the interests of J. Elgin ,fc-
Kinley, the Progressive Conserv-
ative candidate in the forth-
coming election. The guest
speaker was Garfield Case, of
Owen Sound.
Hector Forcier is busy mak-
ing final arrangements for the
official opening of his new
service station at St. Joseph.
Mr. Mervyn Tiernan, of Dash-
wood, had the misfortune last
week while throwing a ball to
injure his knee.
Charles Thiel has gone to
great •deal of work in having
an attractive lawn planted in
front of his new home in Zur-
ich.
10 YEARS AGO
MAY, 1954
Mr. Quimby Hess, a native of
Zurich, has been promoted to
a Regal Forester, and has been
moved from. Sault Ste. Marie to
Cochrane.
Mrs. Gideon Koehler has re-
turned to her duties as teacher
at the Parr Line school, after
an absence of a few weeks.
Mrs, Lorne Rader, of Zurich,
was the lucky winner of a tele-
vision set at the stock car races
in Ailsa Craig Monday after-
noon,
Sixteen farmers in the Dash-
wood area came to the rescue
of Carl Oestreicher last week,
when they plowed, manured and
packed 15 acres of land in
readiness for bean seeding. Mr.
Oestreicher was recently in-
jured in an accident with a
chain saw.
Edmund Maier passed away
suddenly at his residence near
Dashwood, in his 60th year. He
had beenup and around, work-
ing on the farm all day,
The marriage took place in
Wingham of Doris Armitage
and Dr. Bruce Eickmeier, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eick-
meier, of Zurich. The couple
will live in Exeter.
Highway 84 from Hensall
through Zurich to St. Joseph
has received its annual baptism
of hot tar, which will greatly
help in settling the dust for the
summer months.

This fall on Monday evening
CBS is staying with "To Tell
the Truth" at 8:30 and CBC will
keep Don Messer in his usual
spot. In opposition, ABC will
present "Voyage to the Bottom
of the Sea"; NBC will present
"90 Bristol Court" and CTV
will run the 60 -minute "Wagon
Train" series. The 10 p.m. slot
will be interesting with ABC
running "Ben Casey"; CBS go-
ing with "Slattery's People";
NBC playing "Hitchcock" and
CTV with "Dr. Kildare". CBC
will run last in this race' with
one of their sustainers.
On Sunday, May 31st, the Kit-
chener TV station will provide
exclusive coverage of the Lions
Club parade, while the "Lions"
are in the city for their conven-
tion. Over 15,000 are expected
to attend. There are over 200
units in the parade which will
last 31/2 hours. Telecast time
is 2:15 p.m.

First "Burke's Law" episode
for this fall is entitled "Who
Killed Vaudeville", and they
may get such stars as Mae West,
Bud Abbott and Gypsy Rose
Lee.

WE HEAR—ABC, who has
contracted former President
Eisenhower as a commentator
for the Republican Convention
this summer, is worried about
its exclusivity since hearing

that both the ether networks
are planning to have cameras
trained on him during the con-
vention.
