The likely winners at this stage are Henry Cabot Lodge in Ore- gon and Barry Goldwater in California, And the only reason Gold- water will probably win in California is that Mr. Lodge — the hardest -running non -candi- date in the United States—is not listed on the California bal- lot. where no write-ins are al- lowed and the contest is limited to authorized candidatures. I have recently returned from a swing through these states, where I talked with Republican party pros, seasoned newspaper- men and many typical voters. EXCITING NEW The race for the Republican party nomination is following a curious course in this presiden- tial election year. The harder the declared candidates cam- paign, the more unpopular they become. The greater the ex- posure of the two major cam- paigners, Mr. Goldwater: and New York Gov. Nelson Rock - feller, the less enthusiasm they appear to be able to whip up among the party faithful, This unusual state of affairs accounts in large part for the phenomenal popularity of Mr. Lodge, the 1960 Republican vice-president candidate, who has serverd for the past year as U.S. ambassador to South Vietnam. It took Lodge's upset victory in New Hampshire to convince PROFIT OPPORTiTiES FROM CALVES THAT GROW AND GROW AND GROW! Mr. and Mrs, Cyril Masse, of Republican party pr os that neither of their big guns were able to sell themselves to the rank and file voter. It also knocked the stuffings out of Richard Nixon's pretentions to the 1964 nomination, although his public support remains gen- erally widespread. As both the California and Oregon primaries will commit the state's convention delegates on the first ballot, Sen. Gold- water will have to sweep both of them to remain in serious contention. It is clearly evident he will be unable to carry Oregon, where the public opinion polls give Mr. Lodge nearly 50 per cent of the vote, with the bal- ance split among five other candidates, Despite Mr. Goldwater's in- ability to seriously discuss the politcal issues that confront the the United States today, he probably will carry California. It will be a slender victory, however, made possible only by the lunatic fringe of right ening conservatives .and John Birthers that dominate the party in Los Angeles County. 0 BLAKE NEWS Sunday guests with Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gingerich were Mr. and Mrs. Ken Gingerich, Norma and Elaine, and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Gingerich and family. Mother's Day On Sunday last was Mother's Day in many parts of our land. Mothers had made preparations for the occasion and awaited pa- tiently for the arrival of their children to embrace and greet them as they entered the home, as she had many times done during their infancy. Needless to say the love of a mother never ceases. She cherished them when in the cradle and each and every year that fol- lowed. A mother's heart is al- ways ready to forgive and for- get any grievances. It has been so, for all times in the past, and by that great gift given them it will remain so for all future times. Children who have a mother today to com- municate with should be grate- ful and should never cease to show their gratitude for what they have received from :her, be it in a way of care given .them or words of consolation given then in times of .despair. Those wh o are motherless, caused' by death, for they too in previous times were often consoled, should have a daily moniento for their deceased mothers. Visit of Brother Andre A correction on the year of Mrs.. Bessette's death, which was November 10, 1854. After the death of the father, who was a wood carver and accidentally killed when falling a tree, there was no income for the mother so the best she could do was to disperse of her chil- dren with relatives and good friends so that they would re- ceive good care. Before death she called all of her children together, giving them her last recommendations and also her last request to be buried near the grave of her husband in the town of Farn- ham. Also she asked the other children of the family to take care of their brother, Alfred, for she knew he was of a frail constitution. Alfred and his mother were very close for he was unlike the other children of the family, still young, he was always kind to all and many times when in children's com- pany he would oppose them in any argument or if they used profane language. She did not ignore the other children in the family but per- haps she had divine inspiration that Alfred was to be a child Junior Player is Offered T r :out Bill Chipchase, ie, Hensall, who played centre ice with the Hensall-Zurich Combines who captured the all -Ontario Junior "D" championship this year, has received word to report for try -outs with Detroit Red Wings in Hamilton this August. This is not intended to be a near coverage of Alfred's boy- hood days, for each day there was something strange that he would do, many times seen praying for his deceased moth- er and perhaps asking guid- ance of her.
