Zurich Citizens News, 1964-04-30, Page 7THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 1964 PAGE SEEN ST. JOSEPH and DRYSDALE Mr, and Mrs. Rudolph Etue, who recently sold their farm near Seaforth, are spending a few days in this neighbourhood with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hetzel and family, of Detroit, called on relatives in this neighbour- hood the past week. They were on their way to Goderieh where they also visited with relatives. Mr, and Mrs. Jimmy Senlly and three daughters and Mrs. Pete Masse, all of Detroit, called on Mr. and Mrs. F. Ducharme on Saturday last. Mrs. Masse attended to some business .ancl also had someone to look at some work to be done along the bank, such as filling gullies and leveling off land in preparation for selling of building lots as the surroundings are very prom- ising for that purpose. Visitors frons. Zurich at the Ink home of Mr. and Mrs. F. Du- charme en Monday last were Mrs. Theresa Hartman and Mrs, Avila Sararas. Water Needed Seeding is well underway in this neighbourhood, the land was in the best of shape, but very dry and rain is needed even though it would mean a delay for those who are not finished. Surface wells are low, water runs are dry and even springs which in the past were flowing over are now well be- low their normal line. Natur- ally with the drought last fall and a low fall of snow during the winter, and so far a dry spring, it could mean a water shortage and no moisture to shoot along the spring grain and other seeds. Therefore, in all, we might feel the pinch of EXCITING NEW PROFIT OPPORTUNITIES FROM CALVES THAT GROW AND GROW AND GROW! What is still far from clear is the long-term effect which the new policy will have on the strength and vitality of the Federal Government. Prime Minister Pearson's bold action in reaching a settlement with Quebec on a national con- tributory pension plan more than makes up for the dismal failure of the recent federal - provincial fiscal conference at Quebec City. Equally, the Prime Minister's decision to increase by one- third rebates paid to the prov- ince out of income tax revenues will go for toward putting the provincial governments on a more sound financial basis. There is a very real likelihood, however, that taxes will have to DONUT:DAYS!! HONEY DIP DONUTS only 50c doz. ICED $ TASTY Fried takes i B i s m a r k s only 60c doz. I only 50c doz. "THE TASTE WILL TELL THE DIFFERENCE" TASTY -NU BAKERY PHONE 100 — ZURICH UNDERCOVER FASHIONS from be boosted by more than $200 million per year to make up for Federal Government losses. There is a danger, too, that these fast moving actions could signal a series of retreats by Ottawa ending, in the virtual elimination of a strong federal government in Canada. It is to be hoped that coming events will not bear out such a gloomy interpretation. I do not share the opinion that we are going along with a "sell out" to Quebec, but I am con- cerned about further weaken- ing the Federal Government in the face of increasing demands from the provinces. As far as the Canada Pension Plan is concerned, the new deal reached to accommodate Que- bec and Ontario is welcome news. The plan is not as good as the one proposed by Quebec, but it is an improvement over Ottawa's most recent offering. By ensuring pensions up to $104 monthly in addition to the $75 universal old age pension, it will bring at least minimum se- curity to hundreds of thousands of Canadian who would never have been covered by private pension plans. It can expected that the na- tion's insurance companies will continue to oppose the plan, but they will be able to count on very little political assistance from opposition parties in Par- liament. The pension plan will also be used by opponents of Govern- ment-sponsored medical insur- ance in their attempts to fur- ther delay a national medicare program for all Canadians. It will be argued that the pension plan is all Canada can afford for the time being—that we can't possible undertake the costs of federal medicare at the same time. This argument should be dis- posed of promptly, because it is totally false. Government - FESTIVAL BANDEAU Two section broadcloth cup with embroidered top section. Lined undercup for added uplift.
