agleson and rented MacKay's
arage for a year..
In 1924 he bought a lot on
ran Gregor Square from Wil-
iam Dixon and built his own
arage, In 1927 he built the
3luewater Booth to the south
f the garage which Mrs. West-
ake operated until 1950.
In 1951 Walter Westlake ac -
nixed an extra lot from John
✓IacKenzie, tore down his old
arage and built a new one.
It was he who fostered the
icnic tables on Clan Gregor
quare. So many people bought
ood, soft drinks or a pot of
ea at the Bluewater Booth
ind took it to their cars, that
Halter built one picnic table
or the convenience of their
patrons, and put it under the
naples on the park opposite the
booth.
It was appreciated so much
that next year he added three
more tables. And they were
invariably filled around meal-
time on a fine day in the sum-
mer. After about four years,
the Village trustees got the idea
of a service to visitors and
placed then around the square,
built swings, etc., for the chil-
dren.
Walter Westlake 'has been
the efficient chief of the Bay -
f ield Fire Department, a volun-
teer organization, since it was
formed in 1947, •and has also
contributed greatly to the me-
chanical operation of the ve-
hicles.
For two years he has thought
of selling, as the pressure of
work mounted.
Asked what he intended to
Flo, he replied in his usual jocu.
lar manner: "Selling will put
me on Easy Street, I's just
going to sit and watch the po-
tatoes grow!"
And as an afterthought, he
said, "There'll be plenty to do
around the garden to keep me
occupied."
Actually, he is looking for-
ward to freedom from respon-
sibility, to be able to pick up
and go to visit their sons in
British Columbia, or take other
trips as the spirit moves them.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter West-
lake have three sons and two
daughters: William, superinten-
dent A, C. McEachern & Co.,
