Com pines Win Over
Str:throy Rockets
Much to the delight of over
1,000 local fans, the Hensall-
Zurich Combines last 'Wednes-
day night won the group cham-
pionship in OHA Junior D con -
petition, when they eliminated
Strathroy in the seventh game
of their best -of -seven series.
The victory was a real come -
from -behind effort for the Com-
bines, as they trailed the series
at one point, 3-2.
In racking up their 5-4 win
in the crucial seventh game at
Hensall, the Combines had to
come from behind in this game
as well, as Strathroy held a
one -goal advantage at two dif-
ferent stages of the contest.
Bob Livermore was the big gun
for the locals, triggering two
goals, while Bruce Cooper, Craig
Chapman and Earl Wagner each
tailed once.
The fans were barely in their
seats for the start of the game
when Chapman sent the Com-
bines into a one -goal lead, on
an assist from Wagner, at the
.35 second mark. Midway
through the period Jim Bender
registered the first Strathroy
goal, to tie the score. At 17:10
a blushing Dale Turvey shot the
puck into his own net behind
Dennis Amacher, when he at-
tempted to clear it out from

beside the net.
Despite continued pressure
on the Strathroy net all through
the second period, it was not
until the 19:35 mark that Liver-
more banged in a pass from
Cooper and Mike Cushman, to
again tie the score.
After only two minutes were
played in the third period, Ben-
der scored his second goal for
the Rockets, to shoot them into
the lead again. About two min-
utes later Livermaore found the
range on a neat play with Coop-
er and Cushman, to tie the
score. At 13:50, with sheer de-
termination showing on his
face, Cooper took a pass from
Cushman and slipped it behind
Len Brown, in the Strathroy
net. What turned out to be the
winning goal was scored at
16:20, when Chapman and Shad -
dick started off a play in their
own end, and slipped the puck
to Wagner, just past the Strath-
roy blueline. The tricky wing-
er pulled the goalie to one side
of the net, and flipped the puck
into the other side.
Just 25 seconds later Cam
Brady brought Strathroy back
into contention when he scored
on Amacher. With about two
minutes left to go in the game
Strathroy pulled their goalie in
an attempt to score the equal-
izer, and the strategy almost
back -fired as it had in a previ-
ous game, Chapman grabbed
the puck at his own blueline
and shot it for the Strathroy
net, only to hit the goal -post.
For the last two minutes the
Combines hung desperately to
preserve their victory and win
the series.
Throughout most of the game
Combines held a decided edge
in the play, but they were hav-
ing trouble finishing off their
plays around the net. On top
of this, when they did break
through they had to beat an
outstanding g o a l i e in the
Strathroy net.
As the buzzer went to nark
the end of the game hundreds
of fans swarmed onto the ice
to congratulate their favourites.
It was a happy but tired group
of players who finally made
their way to the dressing room.
In sharp contrast to the other
games of the series, the contest
was cleanly played throughout.
Efficient refereeing by Jerry
Olinski and Ed Malcheski, of
Kitchener, kept both the play-
ers and the fans well satisfied.
Only 13 penalties, all minors,
were handed out with five go-
ing to the Combines and eight
to the Rockets.

Combines Lead Gravenhurst in Semi-final
Series; Play at Hensall on Friday Night
The Hensall-Zurich Combines
have taken a big two -game lead
in their best -of -seven play-off
series with the Gravenhurst
Braves, for the right to advance
into the OHA Junior D finals.
Last Friday night at Brace -
bridge, the locals trounced the
Braves 8-1, and then back in
Hensall on Monday night they
rang up an impressive 7-2 score.
Third game •of the series was
played in Bracebridge last night
(Wednesday) and the fourth
game is scheduled for the Hen-
sall Arena this Friday night.
Game time will be 9 p.m.
If a fifth game in the series
is needed, it will be played on
Sunday afternoon at Brace -
bridge; a sixth game, if neces-
sary, will be back in Hensall
on Monday night, and a seventh
game, if necessary, will be play-
ed in Bracebridge the following
Wednesday night. The winner
.of this series will meet either
Stoufville or Campbellford in
the final round for the OHA
title.
Combines 7-Gravenhurst 2
Rick Stade was the big giant
killer in the Monday night game
at H e n s a 11, as he turned
aside dozens of Gravenhurst
scoring threats. Stade was re-
placing Dennis Amacher, who
was out with an injury, in the
Combines' net, and played a
sensational game, despite suf-
fering a pulled leg muscle him-
self early in the third period.
With less than a minute left in
the game, Stade collapsed on
the ice from pain, but after a
couple of minutes he got back
on his feet and finished the
game.

caught fire, and aggressive
young Bill Chipchase banged in
a pass from Dale Turvey and
Bob Hoffman. With only two
minutes to go in the period,
Shaddick converted a pass -out
from Earl Wagner into a clean-
cut goal, to give the locals a 21
lead at the end of the first
session.
Craig Chapman scored at 8:30
of the second period, to give
the Combines a bigger edge, but
midway through the session
Corosky banged in a rebound
for Gravenhurst.
Both goals scored by Graven-
hurst were no fault of the
young star. On both occasions
he stopped the first shot on a
breakaway, only to have some-
one bang in the rebound from
close in, with the Combines' de-
fence failing to cover up.
The two- teams battled on
even terms throughout the first
16 minutes of the first period,
before Wickman finally found
the range for the Braves. A

The big difference in the two
teams showed in the third peri-
od, when a determined crew of
Combines found the range four
times, while holding the Braves
off the score sheet.
Craig Chapman and Bill Shad -
dick each scored twice for the
locals, while Chipchase, Cooper
and Kyle added single markers.
A total of 15 penalties were
handed out in the game by ref-
erees Frank Slota and Ed Mal-
cheski, with the Combines pick-
ing up nine of them.
Combines 8-Gravenhurst 1
Playing up in Bracebridge
last Friday night, the Combines
chalked up an easy 8.1 victory
in the first game of the series.
The score was tied 1-1 at the
end of the first period, but the
Combines carne on strong in the
second and added four unan-
swered goals. They banged in
three more in the third with-
out allowing the hone team to
score once.
Dale Turvey shot the Com-
bines into a lead at the 5:15
mark of the first period, when
he let go a sizzler from the
point while Gravenhurst was
shorthanded. Two minutes later
Brian Williams scored the lone
goal of the game for the Braves
when he beat Amacher while
Kyle was sitting out •a hooking
penalty. Throughout the period
the Combines held a decided
edge on the play, and they
missed several scoring oppor-
tunities while Gravenhurst was
short-handed.
The second period was less
than a minute old when Bob
Livermore banged in a pass -out
from Mike Cushman, picking
the top left corner. At the 11 -
minute mark Livermore scored
his second goal of the game,
when he flipped in a pass from
linemates Bruce Cooper and
Cushman. The nicest goal of
the game came at the 12:10
mark, when Cooper grabbed the
puck in his own end and stick -
handled his way through the
entire Gravenhurst team. Bob
Hoffman, playing on a newly -
formed line with Dennis Mor-
risey and Bill Chipchase, finish-
ed off the scoring in the second
when he scored unassisted from
a scramble in front of the
Gravenhurst net.
At 1:15 of the third period,
Wagner flipped out a pass from
behind the Braves net, and laid
it on Shaddick's stick, who in
turn made no mistake in pick-
ing the corner of the net he
wanted, While Gravenhurst was
shorthanded at the 14:00 min-
ute mark, Craig Chapman bang-
ed at the puck while he was on
his knees, in front of the Braves
net, and beat Mortimer with a
flip to the top left-hand corner.
With less than a minute left to
play and Gravenhurst again
short-handed, Wagner picked up
a beautiful pass from Chapman,
and easily pulled the goalie out
of position to score.

Krainik
Amacher, in the Combines'
net, made a number of brilliant
saves throughout the game,
especially in the third period
when the Gravenhurst six were
pressing hard for another goal.
Only eight minor penalties
were handed out in the game,
with each team drawing four.
Earl Wagner was tagged with a
misconduct in the second peri-
od, when he took offence to a
call made by referee Danny
Poland, of Bracebridge.
All Gravenhurst home games
in the series will be played in
the Bracebridge Arena, due to
the lack of ice at home. The
Bracebridge arena is a beauti-
ful building, with seating capac-
ity for almost 3,000 fans. About
500 attended the game.
