Serres Produces Real thrillers
Following a thrilling 6-4 vie- centre -man scored twice, at the
tory over the Strathroy Rockets
on Monday night, the Hensall-
Zurich Combines tied their best -
of -seven series at three games
each, Seventh and deciding
game of the series was played
last night, (Wednesday) in the
Hensall Arena.
On Saturday night in Hensall,
the Combines lost a heart -break-
er as they saw an early 4-0 lead
disappear in about 15 minutes
of the third period. However,
with their backs to the wall on
Monday night in Strathroy,
they played heads -up hockey all
the way and came through
with a thrilling 6-4 win to tie
the series and force the seventh
game.
Combines 6 — Strathory 4
An outstanding performance
by the high -flying line of Bill
Shaddick, Craig Chapman and
Earl Wagner enabled the Hen-
sall-Zurich Combines to tie the
series at three games each, in
Strathroy on Monday night.
Shaddick spear -headed the at-
tack with three big goals and
two assists. Chapman scored
once and assisted on three,
while Wagner picked up four
assists.
After spotting the Rockets an
early goal at the four -minute
mark of the first period, Shad -
dick and company took over and
soon skated to a 3-1 lead before
the session ended. The classy

seven -minute mark and again
at the 11:3G mark. At 17:38
while his team was short-hand-
ed, Dale Turvey broke away
with Shaddick and Chapman
and scored to give the Com-
bines a healthy 3-1 lead.
The Combines missed several
scoring opportunities in the sec-
ond, and on several occasions
were thwarted in their attempts
by the fine goal -tending of Les
Brown in the Rockets' net. The
only goal of the period was
scored by Strathroy at the .15
second mark, when they were
turning in their best effort of
the night.
Early in the third period,
Steve Kyle shot the Combines
into a 4-2 lead when he banged
in a pass from Chapman and
Wagner, A couple of minutes
later, however, Alex Campbell
fired the Rockets right back
into the game when he slipped
the puck past Dennis Amacher,
in the Combines' net.
Shaddick scored what proved
to be the winning goal at the
13:08 mark, when he converted
a neat pass from Wagner into a
goal. At 17:20 with the Rockets

With about two minutes left
in the game, Strathroy coach
Don Mayes pulled his goalie in
an attempt to score the equal-
izer, but the move back=fired.
as Chapman picked up a pass
from Shaddick and Kyle, and
fired it into the empty net,
The Combines came out on
the short end of the penalty
parade, as they were assessed
nine minors, compared to the
six given Strathroy.
Along with the outstanding
play of the Shaddick-Chapman-
Wagner line, Dale Turvey and
Steve Kyle were towers of
strength on defence, breaking
up numerous Strathroy attacks
before they crossed the blue -
line. The entire team turned
in a fine effort in the do-or-die
game, and Amacher in the nets
made a number of sensational
saves, About as many fans
from the Hensall-Zurich area
were at the game as were pres-
ent from Strathroy.
Strathroy 5—Combines 4
In Hensall on Saturday night
the Combines saw an early 4-0
lead disappear, as a determined
Strathroy crew pumped in five
quick goals to win the fifth
game of the series.
Goals by Mike Cushman and
Bob Livermore in the first peri-
od gave the locals a healthy
lead early in the game. Then

in the second Dale Turvey and
Bruce Cooper each scored once,
to increase the Combines lead
to 4-0.
For the first two periods the
Combines were in complete con-
trol all the way, as they held
the free -wheeling Rockets off
the score sheet. In the third
period, however, the roof fell
in and the Strathroy six pump-
ed in five quick goals. As late
as 18:40 in the third, the Com-
bines were still hanging on
grimly to a 4-3 lead, but Alex
Campbell banged in a rebound
to tie the score at 4-4. With
only 55 seconds of regulation
time left, Jim Bender scored
his fourth goal of the game to
give the Rockets their victory.
For the first twa periods the
Combines played brilliant hoc-
key as they skated and checked
like they were out to win. In
the third period, however, the
team fell apart defensively and
showed none of the class they
displayed in the first two ses-
sions.
The Combines were still
short-handed for the big game,
as they played without two reg-
ular defencemen, Bob Hoffman
and Bill Murney. • Despite hav-
ing his arm in a cast, Bruce
Cooper was back in the line-up,
and played a terrific game for
the Combines, scoring one goal
and assisting on another.

Aside from the game itself,
there was plenty of excitement
in the stands throughout the
evening. A number of fights
broke out in different sections
of the building, caused by a
group of hostile Strathroy fans.
Time after time the ice was
littered with debris, as the visit-

refereeing being done by Gus

went home happy. There might

Added to the excitement of
the evening, was a couple of
extra loud fire -crackers explod-

game. Usually the firecrack-
ers came at the heighth of a big
disturbance, either on the ice
or in the stands. About 800
fans attended the game.
