ST. JOSEPH and DRYSDALE
BRANCH OFFICE: Bank of Montreal Building
On Sunday morning last from The hardest part of the winter
carne in the late fall and early
part of the winter, The ground
bog prediction was a failure on
candlemass day and people who
are looking for signs may loose
confidencee in the ground -hog
roaming in the open and glanc-
ing at his side to see if his
shadow will appear. The pub-
lic today are hard to convince
even though it met with much
approval in many countries and
also in our own environment in
years gone by.
There is another sign which
the old settlers of this commun-
ity had and which they awaited
with some uneasiness, and that
is the weather on Good Friday.
That clay they preferred cool
weather, it meant a dry spring
and they would be sure to put
in their seeding, Way back in
the year of 1915 and 1916, they
were bad years for the farmers
who trusted more on grain seed-
ing. The bean crop was not the
acreage that it is today. The
year of 1916 was a very mild
Good Friday, with warm show-
ers during the day followed by
thunder storms. Already the
h
old farmers made their
predic-
tions which came true to the
letter, it was broken weather
for the next six weeks. At
that time, like today, there were
some who believed in early
sowing and some had seeded a
few acres before Good Friday.
That crop was good, those who
waited a little later waited till
the third of June for grain seed-
ing, which in all cases returned
only the price of the seeds.
Zurich, Mrs, Theresa Hartman
and son, accompanied by Mrs.
Avila Ducharme of the Blue -
water south, motored to Wind-
sor and from there to Detroit
to the home of Mr. and Mrs,
Bob Saeur, of that city, to at-
tend a bridal shower. in honor
of Miss Diane Stansberry, of De-
troit, who will become, a bride
in the month of June.
Mrs. Denis Charrette •of this
highway has returned to her
home on Saturday last after a
stay in St, Joseph's Hospital,
London, for two weeks, for a
check-up and treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. George Kashut
and family, of Kitchener, were
Sunday last visitors to the tat-
ter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon
Bedard.
Mr. and Mrs. John Mahoney,
Mount Carmel, spent Sunday
last with Mr. and Mrs. Dolph
Sopha.
Already some spring work
has been done on the land, such
as spreading fertilizer on the
wheat fields.
Children in many homes are
stricken with measles at the
present time, which keeps them
confined to their homes.
The winter of part 1963 and
1964 has passed away and the
supposed m o s t disagreeable
months, February for cold and
March for windy and blustry
weather, has been much differ-
ent than most of the past win-
ters. We believe this one will
go on record for being the mild-
est and as well the most pleas-
ant one in decades gone by.
