Attend Convetion
The Menonite churches of the
Kishacoquillas Valley area were
hosts to the 16th Annual Na-
tional Mennonite Youth Con-
vention which was held at Kis-
hacoquillas High School, Belle-
ville, Pennsylvania, August 15-
18, 1963.
Over 3,000 youth from the
United States, Canada, Puerto
Rico and Indonesia attended
the Convention. The feature of
the convention was the memori-
zation by many of Romans 5-8,
from which the theme of the
Convention, "Freedom, Frustra-
tion, Frontier", was used.
John M. Lederach, pastor of
the Zion Mennonite Church,
Hubbard, Oregon, and William
Pannel, noted evangelist from
Detroit, Michigan addressed the
Convention and inspired the
youth to a greater freedom in
living for Christ. Three hun-
dred thirty-eight discussion
groups studied the Bible each
day in talk -it -over groups. Re-
gional quiz teams from various
parts of the United States and
Canada engaged in a contest
which resulted in Ontario win-
ning the championship.
Those from this area who
were on the winning team were
Esther Steckle, Zurich, and
Shirley Saunder, of Exeter.
Miss Carol Erb, of Zurich, also
attended the Convention.
The Convention next year is
scheduled to be held in the
Kitchener area.

first generation that schools
were established in this parish,
It took a few years for the first
• settlers arrival to organize
theirselves to build schools and
since the first settlers and their
first descendants were not pri-
viledged with teaching centres
of any kind. they presumably
had lost interest in education
and besides they feared that
they may not have the means
to properly clothe their child-
ren and give them the neces-
sary care for schooling.
It was not as today in those
long past days, there was no
transportation to care for the
children and ease the burden
of walking miles on snow filled
roads. But regardless •of there
being minus of education they
got along fairly well. In the
coming of the following genera-
tion a sort of a school system
had been established and that
generation took part in public

Regardless of it all, those
early pioneers left good examp-
les and good teachings in .their
way but not until the third
generation did they leave in
their pathway many profes-
sional ones. They leftmany
brilliant minds to their decen-
dants. Many of them became
leaders in society taking full
part in the affairs of the
country.
They have left more than
that, they have left today to
