Those in charge of arrange-, ments were Mrs. Alex McBeath, ' Mrs. Ernest Talbot and Mrs. Nelson Hood. Contests, a sing- song and a reading by Gwyn- neth Hendrick provided enter- tainment. A song extolling the bride preceded the opening of the many gifts. Miss Marjorie Hyde, Miss Betty Cartwright and Miss Joyeee Hoocl assisted :hiss Switzer with the pleasant task of opening them. Miss Joyce Hood entertained at a luncheon Sunday. July 281 in honour of Miss Berva Swit- zer, bride -elect of August. Those attending were school friends from No. 14 Stanley. Miss Switzer was presented with a set of TV tables by Miss Hood from the group, .,...,e« A pair of victories over Staffa and Durham last week clinched first place in the Huron -Perth baseball league, for the Zurich Lumberkings, On Thursday night they won 4.0 over Staffa and then on Saturday afternoon they squeezed out a thrilling 7-6 win over the Durham nine. Zurich now enters a round- robin series with Staffa and Exeter for the league cham- pionship. First game for the locals was played last night in L_•:,_ter, and the first home game is this Friday night against the Staffa crew, ZURICH 4 — STAFFA 0 Playing manager Don O'Brien and George Coveney hooked up in a tight pitcher's duel last Thursday night in Zurich, as both teams collected a total of only seven hits. The two teams battled on even terms until the last half of the fifth inning, when Zurich ,ciueezed their first run across on two walks and an error. They added three more in the sixth, on two singles, two walks. and an error. O'Brien was in complete con- trol throughout the entire game, and only one Staffa runner was able to reach second base. Only four men reached first base in the nine innings. Earl Wagner banged out two singles for the Kings, while Doug O'Brien lined out one. Winners in sports were: races, 5-7 years, Mary Dietrich, Joe Regier; 8 to 10 years, Linda Dietrich, Vincent Ayotte; 11 to 12 years, Angela Ryan, Michael Dietrich; pick the spot, 5 to 7 years, Brenda McCrea, Randy Dietrich; 8 to 10 years, Mary Conlin, Pius Dietrich Jr.; 11 to 12 years, Angela Ryan; Guessing pennies in a jar, Jim Ducharme; oldest person present, Mrs. Christine Diet- rich; youngest baby present, Wayne Cerny, (four months). Families attended from New York, Chicago, Southfield Mich- igan, Pontiac, Port Huron, De- troit, Windsor, Sarnia, Welland, Kitchener, Preston, Toronto, Guelph, Markdale, London, Stratford, Dublin, Zurich, Ex- eter, and Dashwood. The 1963 officers included: Honorary president, Mrs. Laura McCann; president, Joseph Diet- rich; secretary, Mrs. William McCann; sports committee, Mr. and Mrs. Pius Dietrich; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ryan. The 1964 officers include president, Pius Dietrich; vice- president, Alphonse Dietrich; secretary - treasurer, Jerome Dietrich. Earlier in the game the Zurich crew were leading 6-2, but gradually saw their lead dis- appear. Their big break came in the ninth after the first two batters struck out. Don O'Brien lined out a single to centre field, and then stole second. The next bat- ter, Larry Bedard, smashed a single to left field to score O'Brien from second and end the game. Durham opened the scoring in the first inning, when they sent two runners across the plate. Then the Zurich crew came back strong with four runs in their half of the same inning, banging out two doub- les and a single. In the fourth Zurich managed to send two more runs across the plate on three singles, a walk and a sacrifice, Durham came back strong in the seventh when they scored one run on a double and two walks. In the eighth they tied the score when they counted three more runs on three walks, a single and a Zurich error. Larry Bedard and Bill Shad - dick paced the Zurich assault with three hits each, one of Beard's being a double. Doug O'Brien lined out a double and single, while Earl Wagner, Dick Bedard and Don O'Brien each singled. Dick Bedard started on the mound for Zurich and worked well until he was relieved in the seventh by Bill Shaddick. Manager Don O'Brien came on in the eighth to put out the Durham rally, and finished the ninth as well. She had been in the Villa Marie nursing home. She was born in Stanley Township, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Sher- ritt, M.P.
