ALBERT BEDOUR, Proprietor ALVIN WALPER, Auctioneer Attendance at Annual Meeting of Fame Organization Pleases Fieldman (By J. Carl Hemingway) On November 21, members of "Fame" (Farmers Allied Meat Enterprize Co -Operative) held their annual meeting. At- tendance far exceeds the hopes of your board of directors and since their were no expenses allowed by the Ontario organi- zation it was indicative of the genuine, serious concern that livestock producers have in the marketing of their product. This is really a battle be- tween the power of people, and money and dollars are very obedient to their master. That the situation is serious was brought to us forcefully by the guest speaker, Mr. Oron Lee Stanley, president of the National Farmers organization of United States. He told us of conditions in his country and we can compare his statements to our situation. I will try to quote. Agricultural investment re- presents 13 per cent of all in- dustrial investment and the returns to agriculture is four per cent of industrial income. In recent years the farmers share of the consumers' dollar has dropped from 58% to 39% and is still dropping. Farmers in the United States are told what great strides they have made in efficiency, yet no other industry considers itself efficient unless it can show a satisfactory increase in income. On this basis agriculture can- not be considered efficient. Unless we, as farmers, do a better job in this respect then we have done in the past, the fate of the family farm in seal- Broomball BROOMBALL SCHEDULE November 30— Kippen vs Zurich Bluewater vs Parr Line Hensall vs Swamp Rats December 7— Swamp Rats vs Zurich Parr Line vs Hensall Bluewater vs Kippen December 14— Bluewater vs Hensall Kippen vs Swamp Rats Parr Line vs Zurich December 21— Parr Line vs Kippen Zurich vs Hensall Bluewater vs Swamp Rats January 4— Bluewater vs Zurich Kippen vs Hensall Swamp Rats vs Parr Line January 11— Swamp Rats vs Hensall Parr Line vs Bluewater Zurich vs Kippen January 18— Kippen vs Bluewater Hensall vs Parr Line Zurich vs Swamp Rats January 25— Zurich vs Parr Line Swamp Rats vs Kippen Hensall vs Bluewater February 1— Swamp Rats vs Bluewater Hensall vs Zurich Kippen vs Parr Line February 8— Parr Line vs Swamp Rats Hensall vs Kippen Zurich vs Bluewater 1ST GAME 7:30 P.M. The source of power for farmers is the fact that he has control of the food supply yet —but this is fast slipping away from him, Mr. Staley gave an example of one 3200 acre farm owned by a company. Two of the share holders are well known—Jack Benny and Marilyn Munroe, The production is con- tracted to neighbouring proces- sors, The business in the ad- joining town dropped by 85 per cent end of quotation, That this trend is taking place in Canada is quite evid- ent in the broiler industry and I was told just this week that one firm is contracting for eggs on the basis of four cents per dozen. The Corporation supplies the layers and feed, the farmer the building, water, lights, equipment and, I suppose, the litter. Remember this is a start- ing contract. If it proves attrac- tive can easily visualize a neigh- bour offering to contract for three and one-half cents, three cents or two and one-half cents to the very least possible. As you no doubt have not- iced in the press, canning com- panies are obtaining control of source of supply by renting the land for their groups. I was told that one large processor is buying feeders and putting them out to feed on contract. The same is being done in Quebec with hogs. Soon there will be no market for farm pro- duced livestock. The only de- fence for the farmer is the mar- keting of his product, in pro- cessed from, direct to the con- sumer. In Huron County the honour for Warden alternated each year between the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives, with this being the Conserva- tives year, Over 20 Years Service Mr. Becker has taken an active part in municipal politics since 1940, when he first be- came a police trustee in the village of Dashwood. He held that post until 1948, when he was elected for the first time as a member of the Hay Town- ship council. When Hay Town- ship had the privilege of having it's first deputy -reeve in 1954, Mr. Becker was the man who 0 RECIPES MAID OF HONOURS 2 eggs %/% cup lard 3% cup of white sugar Beat well and then add: 1/ teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 cups of flour (sifted) (Mix well) Roll out fairly thick and line tart shells and to each tart add one good teaspoon of date fill- ing. For many years he was fire chief in the village of Dashwood; he has been a member of the South Huron Hospital board for some time; he has been the presid- ent of the Zurich Agricultural Society for the past three years; he is an active member of the Zurich Lions Club and the Zur- ich Chamber of Commerce; he has been on the Hay Township Community Centre board for many years; he has been active worker in his church at Dash- wood over the years; and pro- bably many other organizations which have never been known to the general public. As reeve of the Township, he is also head of the municipally owned tele- phone system. If the members of the County Council elect V. L. OF HENSALL I would like to present some facts in regards to my views as far as I was concerned. I was in opposition to acts of the council in regards to the closing of York Street, when I learned that we would not get any grant, and I asked the council to meet the objectors to the closing of the street, and I quote the Municipal World, of October, 1960. They did not even reject the letters opposing the clos- ing of the street. They contended the objectors should have attended the meeting, yet there was nothing in the notice regarding the closing saying that they had to be there.. I say the notice was wrong, and I refer you to such notice as posted by the city of London last summer in regards to closing of streets. I also say that Mr. Hay had never asked for or received permission to make a survey for a title drain for the sub- division. I did not object to this because the council was unanimous in passing this survey. Mr. Hay contended that I had agreed and purchased all the tile for the drain, which I deny, as I stopped delivery before any of these tile were delivered. A councillor may not speak to a notion or a contract in which he has an interest, and yet he did at all times speak. I was charged with interference, in what council had decided and I proved that the councillors did not know what contracts they had let for paving, and that I was right. I ask for your support for me and the new council on Monday. John Henderson 1
