Federation Fieldman Asks Democratic
Method Be Used To Pick Delegates
(By J. Carl Hemingway)
Democracy has been a popu-
lar word for many years but I
wonder what it means to most
of us. Does it simply mean go-
ing to vote for one of the candi-
dates on the ballot on election
day, If you didn't have any op-
portunity to name the candidate
you haven't much choice, have
you?
Let's start over again. Demo-
cracy originated in the small
community where every mem-
ber had the opporunity to ex-
press himself. However, as our
area of government grows it be-
comes increasingly impossible
to have each member express
his opinion. We then turn to
the delegate system to give us
some measure of control over
our government.
The same thing applies to
large organizations. The an-
nual meeting of the OFA will
be held in the Royal York, Tor-
onto. How can we, as farm
members of this province wide
organization, retain democratic
control? If we follow the recom-
mended proceedure of this or-
ganization we, will begin with
our township units.
At the annual meeting of this
unit it is possible for every
member to attend and it is with-
in his reach. Here the member
should have the opportunity to
vote to elect the representative
of his choice to the larger Coun-
ty unit.
To be truly democratic the
nominations for this person will
be by secret ballot. This pro-
vides the candidates for the el-
ection to follow and you do then
have the opportunity to vote for
your own choice. Balloting
should continue unitl one has
a clear majority. Unless this

proceedure is followed we are

the ballot. The same method is
then used at county level to
elect the County representative
to the OFA. Yes, it is a lot of
trobule but just remember that
a good many people lost their
lives to give us this method of
governing ourselves a n d it
should be worth some inconven-
ience to preserve the fruits of
their sacrifice.
Having done this you are still
not free from responsibility._' It
is still your duty as well as your
privilege to make suggestions at
all levels through resolutions.
If this is done we will be as
close to true democractic gov-
ernment as is possible in a large
society. But let it be fully un-
derstood that the opportunity to
nominate is just as important,
if not more important, than the
right to vote.
If your leaders provide the op-
portunity for you to speak and
you say nothing they are justi-
fied in thinking you have noth-
ing to say.
A good example of this fail-
ure of farmers to speak was the
hearing on crop insurance that
was held in Mardale last Friday
by the government crop insur-
ance committee. In spite of
personal invitations to a large
number of representative farm-
ers and organization leaders,
only four attended. Are farm-
ers in favour or opposed?

Passed a few shacks here and
there along the way but did not
want to awaken the people for
information, But to our good
luck in the near distance we
spotted a small shack with a
dim Kerosine lamp burning, and
no shades in the small wind-
ows facing the road. The dis-
tance inward from the road was
about 100 yards.
When we got opposite it, I

Mr. and Mrs. Percy Bedard,
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bedard and
Mrs. Edward Bedard, motored
to St, Clair, Michigan, on Thurs-
day last, to attend the funeral
of the late Edward Mireau, who
had died at the home of his son-
in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Claud Bedard, of St. Claire
His wife died August 15, 1963.
Both Mr. Mireau and his wife,
the former Laura Denomme,
were natives of this parish,
Mr. Mireau is survived by
three daughters, Mrs. Claude
Bedard and Mrs. Dorine Fand-
rich, both of St. Clair, and Mrs.
Theresa Kane, of Detroit; a
son, Theodore Mireau, also of
St. Clair; Mrs. Edward Bedard,
of Drysdale, being a sister; Mrs.
Beatrice Mireau, London, and
Mrs. William Thoueson, of
Wingham, they being half-sis-
ters. two half brothers, Fred
Mireau, of • Wingham, and Jerry
Mireau, London; also 12 grand-
children. Burial was held in St.
Mary's Church, St. Clair, Mich-
igan.
Mr. Mireau was born July 16,
1886. Both he and his wife mo-
ved to St. Clair in 1921. The
deceased was employed by the
Diamond Crystal Salt Company,
and he retired in 1951. He was
a member of the St.Clair coun-
cil, was a member of the
Knights of Columbus, and be-
longed to the Holy Name Soc-
iety of St. Mary's Church in his
home town.
He was suddenly strickened
with a heart failure and while
under Doctors examination,
when taking his blood pressure,
he slumped over and passed
away.
To the beloved family we of-
fer our deepest sympathy in
their moments of trial and
grief.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Overholt,
and children, of London, spent
a week's vacation in the Drys-
dale district with their parents.
They also called on other rela-
tives in the neighbourhood be-
fore returning home.
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Geoffroi
and children motored to Detroit
on Friday last, to spend the
weekend with relatives in that
city.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ryder
and family, of London, spent
the weekend at the home of the
latter's parents, Mr, and Mrs.
Leon Bedard.
Mrs. F. Ducharme was a
Thursday last visitor with Mrs.
Sarah Geoffroi and family, of
St. Joseph.
OUR NORTHERN VENTURE
(continued from last week)
After we had crossed the
stream of water to land on the
Island in the late afternoon, we
had then about 20 miles to go
to reach the port where the boat
would be leaving at the fixed
hour of 6:00 o'clock the next
morning. We considered it a
short jaunt giving us plenty of
time to reach port. It being
dark and the roads on the island
were twisty, so we had to be
careful not to go astray.

course they both knew how to
swear. What to do, only to
knock on the the door and dis-
turb them in their fight, and
introduce ourselves as voyagers
trying to reach our port.
They calmed down to a stand
still, then the man opened the
door. His young wife caution-
ed him to be careful not to get
hurt by perhaps ruffians. The
husband advised us we were
only about two miles from the
port, but the woman came to
his help and said a little more
on account of a jog in the road.
We told them the direction we
were going and they said we
were right.
We thanked the young coup-
le and pretended we didn't hear
their scrap. Perhaps it was the
means of establishing peace in
their little home. We reached
the boat in plenty of time. At
the fixed hour we sailed over
rough water, as it was already
fall and with high winds. W e
reached Owen Sound the fol-
lowing mid-day, After having
a lunch in the town, we started
southward on the home stretch.
But there was still planning
to do for already I and the
youngest were running short of
dough.
