Federation Fieldman Not Opposed To
Great Britain In Common Market
There has been a good deal
of comment in the papers rec-
ently concerning the entry of
Great Britain into the European
common market, with particu-
larly strong opposition from
Canada.
It doesn't seem long since
many of these same people were
proclaiming Canada to be a free
and independent nation. We
apparently felt quite proud of
ourselves when we set up our
own Supreme Court. There ap
parently was little complaint
when duties were imposed on
British goods coning to Canada.
Not many voiced their displeas-
ure when by a nice bit of monip-
ulated arbitrary valuation on
our part we placed the equival-
ent of a sizeable tariff on Brit -

tariff simply made it easier for
American imports to compete
with British imports, and this
in spite of the fact that our
trade with the US is in a stron-
gly adverse condition.
If we feel no responsibility to
Britain, it is hardly fair that
we should expect favours from
her.
However, it is with the im-
pression with. regard to agricul-
ture that I am concerned. We
are being led to believe that the
entry of Britain into the com-
mon market will be very bad
for Canadian agriculture, I
would like to quote from the Ot-
tawa report of October 13, 1961.
"Referring to the 57 percent
of Canada's exports to the UK
that have no commonwealth pre-
ference, we should have added
that there is no indication that
the UK joining the Europeon
common market will reduce the
prices received for Canada's ex-
ports. Take wheat, for examp-
le, UK wheat prices would be
expected to rise to fit in with
other west Europe prices, e.g.
the price in West Germany runs
about $3.00 a bushel, 60-80 cents
above the delivered price for
Canadian wheat. This is now
covereted by an import levy im-
posed by West Germany. To
substitute a 20 percent tariff, as
ECM proposes for this import
levy, would be no hardship for
Canadian wheat exporters and
night be a substantial advan-
age.

arge supplies of butter and
kim powder are having a de-
ressing effect on the whole in-
ustry. However, the real d.if-
iculty seems to be the inability
f the powers that be to dispose
f the small surplus as it ap-
ears. After a small surplus is
ccumulated for three or four
ears, it suddenly becomes a
uge problem.
Even in cheese where we are
gain going to fail to supply the
vailable market we have a con-
derable surplus simply be-,
use there is not enough first
ade cheese being made. Truly,
nditions in the dairy indus-
yrare bad, but certainly not so
d that really concerted effort
the part of producers could -
t correct.

Annual Banquet of
U. Church Laymen
Harvey Putman, Canifstan,
near Belleville, will be the
guest speaker of United Church
laymen and their wives next
week. The occasion is the An-
nual Banquet sponsored by
Presbytery Men. It will be held
in Ontario Street United Chur-
ch, Clinton, next Wednesday ev-
ening.
A small garage owner, Put-
nam will share his experiences
as a member of the "Cross-
roads Africa" team. His en-
thusiasm was sparked by Dr.
James Robinson of New York at
the Elgin House conference.
Dr. Robinson in outlining his
work with American groups on
"Crossroads Africa" was asked
by the United Church to take
with him in 1960 a Canadian
group.
Older than the team mem-
bers. Putman paid his own way
to join the group. His movies
of the experience are part of
his presentation.
