There Is A Type of Ontario Peach
Grown For Every Special Need
In this scientific age many
fruits and vegetable have been
developed for a specific pur-
pose. Take peaches for instan-
ce: Vineland researcher 0. A.
Bradt says at least five variet-
ies have been tailored for spec-
ial uses. Rehaven is very good
for freezing. It matures in mid-
August. These peaches have a
.bright -red colour with an or-
ange background. They're us-
ually freestone when ripe.
Golden Jubiliee is a good can-
ning peach, but it is not recom-
mended for freezing. It will be
on the market a few days after
the Redhaven. Jubilees are
freestone and peel easily, but
the colour is not as bright as
the redhaven.
Envoy is very good for freez-
ing and canning. This medium-
sized peach is yellow-leshed and
freestone, I'ts ready about the
third week in August.
Valiant, Vedette, and Veteran
are popular known as the V's.
They're particularly good, for
eating and also good for can-
ning. They're in season in late
August or early September.
Elberta is an excellent can
ping peach. It's freestone.
These peaches are the last var-
iety that you will be able to get
in the fall.
One caution: If you buy pea-
ches that are not fully ripe,
leave them at room tempera-
ture until they ripen. Under -
ripe peaches will not ripen at
refrigerated temperatures. Once
the peaches are ripe, refrigerate
them.

Fear Blight May Cause Heavy'
Loss To Season's Potato Crop
Rainy and humid weather
again poses the threat of late
blight on potatoes according to
the Canada department of agri-
culture report for Middlesex,
Huron, Lambton, Oxford. and El-
gin Counties.
Growers are renewing con-
trol measures said J. J. John-
son, inspector in charge of the
fruit and vegetable division of
the department.
Offerings of cobblers are lib-
eral but demand rather dull
with prices to growers about 90
cents for a, 75 -pound bag of No.
1 grade.
Turnips are growing well and
promise • good' •yields. Turnips
exporting is picking up, with
growers receiving 50-60 cents
for 50 pounds bulk No. 1 grade
at the farm.

Head lettuce crop volume is
now tapering. off ..but recent
good. quality lettuce has found
a ready export market. Onions
now require .dry weather for
harvest completion and grow-
ers say this year's yield will be
cut almost in half because of
leaf spit or ' "blast." Carrots
are turning out well and face
a fair demand.
Corn Yield Good
On the processing front, big
yields of corn are now being
harvested for both canning and
freezing.
Astrichan and Duchess apples
will be cleaned up in a few days
and Mellba is now past peak
volume. The picking of Weal-
thy apples is under way and
about two weeks will move the
bulk of them. Later kinds are
attaining good size and McIn-
