Many Officials To
Assist In Laying
Of Cornerstone
Mrs, Thomas Pryde, widow of
the late M.P.P. for Huron, will
lay the cornerstone of the new
Ontario Hospital, Goderich,' on
September 6. Premier Leslie
1I. Frost will unveil a plaque in
the same ceremony to commem-
orate the event.
The Goderich Hospital is the
first of the new style commun-
ity mental hospitals, Much of
the drive to establish such a
hospital in Huron County came
from Thomas Pryde who repre-
sented the constituency from
1948 until his death in 1958.
Also participating in the cere-
mony will be Hon. Ray Connell,
Minister of Public Works; Hon.
Matthew B. Dymond, Minister
of Health; Charles S. MacNaugh-
ton, M.P.P. for Huron; Warden
Ivan Forsyth of Huron County;
Mayor E. C. Fisher, of Goder-
ich, and Reeve W. J. Forbes of
Goderich Township.
The first stage of construct-
ion of this hospital includes 300
beds in single storey wings. Two-
storey administration and ser-
vice wings link the structures
without a long corridor or in-
stitutional appearnce Anglin -

ted next summer.
Huron Federation Fieldman Discusses
Some Problems Of Milk Producers
(By J. Carl Hemingway)
Recently a fluid milk produc-
er came to the Federation of
Agriculture office to obtain
some information on the mark-
eting agency plan for fluid milk.
Unfortunately information is
not available.
At present a petition is being
circulated among the fluid milk
shippers requesting a vote on
a marketing agency plan. Since
they are given no indication as
to how their milk will be mark-
eted this petition can only indi-
cate the degree of dissatisfac-
tion with their present market-
ing methods,
If sufficient farmers sign the
petition the Whole Milk Produc-
ers League will draw up a de-
tailed plan for the marketing
of fluid milk.
Since the producer of fluid
milk is only receiving 124/
cents per quart for his milk that
retails from 22 cents up, and
since custom pasteurizing and
bottling has been recently done
for three cents per quart for
one of our smaller villages, it
would seem that producers are
well justified in trying to im-
prove the markting of their pro-
duct.
Further there is a great deal
of overlapping in the transpor-
tation of milk. Here again pro-
ducers could effect real savings
through co-ordination of truck-
ing services.

Also the producers of milk
for cheese, butter and all other
manufactured milk products
are working on marketing ag-
ency plans. If these two efforts
can be united I can see the op-
portunity for great benefits. If
they can not be united I fear
that a division will take place
that will be detrimental to the
whole industry.
The basic problem in the milk
industry apparently is the un-
avoidable, small surplus pro-
duction. The cheese producers
for many years have been con-
tributing to an export fund to
remove their surplus to main-
tain a reasonable price at home
only to find surpluses from the
other producers and even from
Quebec reap equal benefits
without contributing to the ex-
port fund. At times this has
rendered the Ontario Cheese
producers efforts almost use-
less.
An over-all milk marketing
plan could take care of this av-
erage t w o percent surplus.
Whether two separate market-
ing agency can suceeeed re-
mains to be seen.
In closing, here are just a
few comments:
I have been hearing rather
too many complaints about Co-
ops. I don't mind discussing
these problems, but I feel that
the place for discussion of these
complaints is at the annual
meeting or board of directors'
meetings of your Co-op. I can
only repeat that there is noth-
ing wrong with your Co --op, that
the members aren't responsible
for, or can't correct.
On the news, Agriculture
Minister Hamilton stated im-
ports of U.S. oats lowered
price three cents per bushel.
Does this make you happy?
