Carl Hemingway) New experiences are always interesting. Having a part in the organization of the "FAME" share sales campaign last week was no exception. When something needs to be done we can always look to people who are busy to get the job done. The canvassers who turned out to the information meetings were certainly no ex- ception. Their enthusiasm was almost matched by their fear of their ability to go out and be salesmen, it was hard to understand this fear of selling something in which they had at least receiv- ed some information which would certainly give them some advantage over the prospective purchaser, yet these same men seemed to have little fear of their ability to sell cattle once a year to men who are in the cattle buying business every day of the week, year after year. Farmers are no match of the cattle buyer than the cattle buyer is a match of the farmer in loading bales all day. Then there was the meeting of people in the canvas. I had the opportunity of doing a lit- tle canvassing in an area where I didn't know the people. In a situation of this kind I can't refrain from analizing the peo- ple I called on. All were unanimous in the need for farmers to have impr- oved income. Those who purchased, and this was nearly half of those called on, seemed to consist of two groups. There was the young farmer who was really finding the going rough. He pinched a little harder and bought a share in order that his bargaining po- wer in selling would be stronger in order that the years to come would be a little better. Then there was the farmer BUY NOW I A NEW SHIPMENT OF oai HAS JUST ARRIVED! Chesnut Coal AND Furnace Coal Order your supply now and be sure of prompt delivery! David and Paul Rader spent a few days in London with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Howe. who was nearing the end of the road, He could expect little fin- ancial benefit in the few years left, but was only interested that the road be a little smoother for the younger feet to travel. Then there were those who did not purchase and seemed to have on intention of doing so in the future. This seemed to be a very small group who were quite confident that they could care for themselves. They were quite ready to agree that conditions were bad and there was real danger of many farmers being forced off their farms, but it also seemed that they were quite sure it would not be them. I wonder? From the promises received for future purchases the lack of ready cash was all too app- arent. While in some cases no doubt these promises will not be kept, there can be no doubt farmers will be processing their livestock through their own pl- ants. It will depend largely on a succesful harvest whether we will have these plants in oper- ation by this time next year.
