Wild Mustard Serious Threat To Ontario
Farm Crops; Remedy is Now Being Used
Wild mustard sometimes called
charlock, herrick, cadluck, or field
kale, has been a serious threat to
Ontario crops since pioneer days.
It was not until the late 1940's that
the discovery of 2, 4-D provided
farmers with an easy, low-cost
method of taming this weed.
The cost is amazingly low; 25
cents worth of 2, 4-D will kill mus-
tard, and most other weeds, in an
acre of oats. According to the
Field Crops Branch, Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture, this ex-
penditure is justified because mus-
tard is very greedy of soil moisture
and plant food. Mustard will gob-
ble up twice the nitrogen and
phosphorus and four times the po-
tash needed for an oat plant.
In addition, one mustard plant,
left to maturity, can return 15,000
seeds to the soil to infest future
crops. Mustard seeds will live for
many years, buried in the soil,
ready to sprout when brought to
the surface.
Wild mustard is a vigorous an-
nual which originated in Europe.
It has fibrous roots, erect stems
covered with stiff hairs, broad
leaves and bright, yellow flowers.
The seed pods, which appear on
the lower part of the stem when
the top is in flower, are one to
two inches long. There is a roun-
ded bulge where each seed is bor-
ne in the pod. This appearance is
termed "knotted." The seed is
black, about one -sixteenth of an in-
ch in diameter, perfectly round,
and very much like kale or turnip
seed.
2, 4-4 amine, applied accor-
ding to the manufacturer's direct-
ions, provides effective and econ-
omical control of wild mustard
where cultural methods of weed
control may fail.
