Travelling Through South America
(continued from page 3)
the most outstanding experiences
of our tour. Passing through val
lays between volcanic mountains,
one could see an occasional mud
hut village, not a tree in sight, no
vegetation whatever and how hu-
man beings could exist is beyond
one's imagination. We had a
glimpse of the famous "Christ of
the Andes" statue before reaching
Santiago, Chili.
The city is located in a beautiful
strip of green land between the
towering Andes and the Pacific
ocean. It is an area of thriving
crops and fine trees. The city has
been destroyed many times by In-
dian attacks and earthquakes, but
is growing steadily as a modern
city.
Altitude Affects Brain
Our next country to visit was
Bolivia, famous for its bin and cop-
per mines., It is a 'desodate-look-
ing country from the air and only
around the Lake Titicaca region is
there enough rain to grow crops
without irrigation.
On arriving at La Paz, the high-
est airport in the world, we were
warned the high altitude would af-
fect us. It - did! Located 12,000
feet above sea level, one can im-
agine we would be light-headed.
The city is built in the bottom of
a deep canyon to provide shelter
from the cold winds. The airport
was small and runways were rough.
In the distance we could see herds
of sheep and Ilamas grazing, un-
perturbed about the modern way of
travel.
Flying over beautiful Lake Tit-
icaca, 120 miles long, and the rug-
ged Andes, we arrived in the "City
of Kings" at dusk. Liana, Peru,
was founded in 1535 and for 300
years it was the largest and weal-
thiest city in South America•
During our four-day visit in this
modern city, we were entertained
by three Peruvian families whose
daughters were Alma College
classmates of our daughter. Being
entertained in foreign homes is
most interesting and their daily
way of life is similar to our. One
exception is the "siesta"—a two-
hour rest period during the heat of
the day—which is prevalent in
South .American countries.
Two Lima Tours
There were two important tours
out of Lima. The Cusco -Machu
Picchu three-day trip by air. Cus-
co is the ancient capital of the
Inoe Indians and is 10000 feet above
sea level. Machu Picchu has mag-
nificent Inca ruins consisting of
houses, temples and a cemetery. As
these are located in the remote
Andes mountains, the experinece
was most thrilling.
Then, a day trip to the Andes
Highlands was pictureque and
colorful. Mountain flowers and
pine trees were everywhere. We
met several herd of llamas, the
beast of burden in the mountain
areas. They are a most interesting
animal, very proud, and have lov-
ely soft fur in black, beige, grey
or brown.
We were on a night flight from
Lima to Mexico City and arrived
in the latter city at sunrise. A
beautiful, modern airport, well
equipped and splendid immigration
officers awaited us. •
Having been in Mexico two years
ago, we stayed in the city for five
days and did not tour the surroun-
ding tourists' attractions. At leis-
ure we toured the famous Chapult-
epec Castle which overlooks the
entire city. In Mexican, Chapul-
tepec means grasshopper, thus the
location is called "Grasshopper
Hill." The castle was the official
home of Emperor Maxmillian and
Empress Carlotta. The ill-fated
couple whose reign was very brief
and troublesome were originally
from Australia.
As we passed over Detroit, the
first sign of snow appeared and
brought us back to the reality that
Canada was having a winter season.
South America is just beginning
to enter the modern age. To act-
ually see steel plants, power plants
and factories as up-to-date as any
in the world was amazing. Engin-
eers from several parts of the
world are spending years in the
interior helping to modernize in-
dustry.
South America has always been
called part of the New World, but
it is just beginning to be new as
Old World methods disappear.

HURON COUNTY
CROP REPORT
(By D. H. MILES, Agricultural
Representative for Huron
County)
Very little, if any, seeding has
taken place to date. Land was al-
most ready last week, but further
cool damp weather with skiffs of
snow has curtailed operations—the
odd field of sod has been plowed.
There is very little growth in fall
wheat and barley. Greater am-
ounts of nitrogen are being used
on wheat, barley and meadows than
ever before.
