TERMS — CASH Mrs. Edith Richard, Proprietress Mrs. Gretta Richard, Proprietress Garnet Hicks, Clerk ALVIN WALPER, Auctioneer Mapie Syrup Time Is Aimost Here Spring is just around the cor- ner and so too is the season for maple syrup—one of the most del- ectable treats Canada can offer from its natural resources. Unfortunately, the maple season regulary means the appearance of the fraudulent peddler. He brings a good imitation to your door and asks you to buy it at a price rang- ing from $3.75 to $5.50 per gallon. You can buy that kind from the stores at less than $2 a gallon. "Be on the lookout for this lad," warns F. R. Armstrong of the Fruit and Vegetable Division, Canada De- patment of Agriculture. "Don't be an easy mark. "Before, buying insist that he show you his ownership and driv- er's licences and take down the numbers of both, as well as his name and address. Look carefully at the label on his syrup; it must be labelled according to law. If the product offered you is maple syrup, it should be labelled `Maple Syrup' (or, in French, `Sirop d'erable') and it should also show a declaration of net weight and the name and compelte address of the packer." The peddler of pure maple syrup will gladly identify himself, know- ing that by so doing he is protect- ing his own interests and those of the maple industry. "Give a thought. too, to the price asked," adds Mr. Armstrong. "Map- le syrup is a seasonal treat, never in long supply. If of good quality, it is never offered at bargain pric- es. The current price, at retail, for good quality syrup is between $6 and $7 per gallon. "Your grocer will have maple syrup, and, unlike the peddler, your grocer will be where you can find him tomorrow if you are not satisfied with your purchase," he concludes.
