Losses Heavy At
Hensall Break-ins

A breakin and theft Thursday
night at John Reid's Texaco service
station, in fiensel', is being inves-
tigated by Chife Constable E. R.
Davis, and Provincial constable D.
M. Westover, of Exeter,
About $50 worth of cigarettes,
plus a quantity of candy bars, three
electric razors and six cigarette
lighters, were stolen. A few pen-
nies in the cash register were ig-
nored by the thieves.
Entry to the station at the junc-
tion of Highways 84 and 4, was
made by jimmying a rear door.

Dashwood Ladies
Guests in Zurich
The Ladies Aid of St. Peter's Lu-
theran Church, Zurich, held a Val-
entine social evening for the Ladies
of Zion Lutheran Church, Dash-
wood, on Thursday, February 9.
The program consisted of a
hymn a piano solo by Dorothy Wag-
ner, a duet by Carold Rader and
Mary Ellen Thiel, accompanied by
Shirley Flaxbard, and a piano solo
by Mrs. John Turkheim.
The remainder of the evening
was spent playing progressive cro-
kinole. Prizes were awarded to
Mrs. Lloyd Rader, Rev. Fischer and
Miss Frieda Haberer,
New Stephen Clerk
Begins His Duties
Sephen township council has cal-
led tenders for the construction of
two bridges during 1961.
The spans are located on conces-
sion 16 and concession B.
The township's new building by-
law was given its final reading by
council last Tuesday afternoon and
the first two permits were issued.
Permits were granted to Harold
Stire, Dashwood, to move a build-
ing, and to Herbert Bocock, Credi-
ton, to make an addition to his
house,
Two warble fly inspectors were
appointed -- William Hodgins. and
Nelson Schenk. The latter replaces
the late Alvin Baker. Warble fly
powder will be purchased from
Phillip Boulianne, Crediton.

of A. M. Harper, Goderich, as audi.
tor, and James A. Howes, Listowel
drainage engineer.
Final reading of the bylaw ap-
pointing Ross Haugh clerk -treasur-
er and tax collector, was given. Mr.
Haugh assumed his duties at the
meeting,
Wilmer Wein was ' reappointed
assessor at the same salary as last
year, $800.
A grant of $25 was made to Hur-
on County Seed Fair.
Rate of pay for helpers on road
work was established at between
75 cents and $1.00 per hour.

Lutheran Ladies To
Cater For Banquet
The Ladies. Aid of St. Peter's
Lutheran Church, Zurich, held
their February meeting on Tues.,
day evening, with 33 members, one
visitor and the pastor present.
Mrs, Arnold Merner, Jr., opened
the meeting with the singing of
`The Church's One Foundation."
This was followed by Psalm 24,
a prayer by the pastor, and another
hymn, "Am I a Soldier Of The
Cross."
Rev. W. P. Fischer showed a
film strip on the last part of "The
Lutheran Litergy."
The president took charge of the
business, when the minutes and
treasurer's reports were given,
The visiting committee reported
making 17 calls. Mrs. Ray Fisher
reported for the parsonage commit-
tee,
The Ladies have decided to ea-
ter to a turkey banquet sometime
in February,
The meeting closed with the
Lord's Prayer and the hymn, "Lord
Dismiss US With Thy Blessing."
Lunch was served by the com-
mittee in charge, and a social half
hour was spent.
Council approved the erection of
a stop sign on Richmond Street,
where it intersects with Leopold
Street in Centralia.
Reeve Glenn Webb presided and
all members were present. Next
meeting will be held Tuesday, Mar-
ch 7, at 1 p.m.
Alvin Rau is Elected New President of the
Bayfield Fall Fair at

The annual meeting of the Bay-
field Agricultural Society—twice
postponed owing to the inclement
weather --was held in the Town
Hall on Wednesday afternoon, Feb-
ruary 1. There was an attendance
of 20.
Fraser Stirling was appointed
chairman for the meeting and Mrs.
A. M. Bassett, secretary.
Mr. Stirling gave a report of the
district meeting in Seaforth and
thanked the members for their co-
operation through the year.
Mrs. A. M. Bassett in her report
pointed out that domestic entries
had been up, ladies work down,
fruit down, with only four entries
in the special commercial feature
in the apple project;the flower
class was filled at the fall fair.
Outside entries were about as us-
ual except in the cattle class where
entries were down.
Mrs. Bassett gave Russell Grain-
ger's financial statement which had
not yet been audited. It showed
that a total of $1,145.01 had been
paid out in prize money, $130.35 of
which went to the school chllden's
section. There was a discussion
concerning small cheques which
had not been cashed thereby leav-
ing the accounts incomplete by the
report showed a healthy balance on
hand,

Jr., were appointed auditors.

Robert Taylor was appointed
chairman for the election of offic-
ers at the directors meeting which
followed, Alvin Rau was named
president to succeed Fraser Stir-
ling who declined the nomination,
first vice-president, John Deeves;
second vice-president, E d w a r d
Grigg.
Mrs. A. M. Bassett retired as
secretary after filling the office
faithfully for 13 years. It was de-
cided to combine the offices of se-
cretary and treasurer. Russell
Grainger who has been treasurer
for the past few years declined to
take the office, and Robert Stirling
was appointed secretary -treasurer
for 1961.
Fraser Stirling suggested that the
society construct show tables for
use in the arena on fair days..After
some discussion re time and work
of carrying in the tables from Clan
Gregor Square, Alvin Rau and Carl
Diehl were appointed a committee
to investigate the cost of new tab-
les.
