ing the last year.
Ernest Talbot, nominated by
Nelson Hood, and John Aikenhead,
dealt with Township roads, and
weed spraying of roadsides and
brush. `Council spent $48,500 on
Stanley roads," he stated, and
9,000 yards of gravel were also ap-
plied "The spraying of weeds
was stepped up this year with a to-
tal cost of $1;475.00, Talbot con-
tinued, "but he felt that the expen-
se was justified."
Elmer Hayter, beginning his se-
cond year on the council, was no-
minated by Ward Forest and Bob
Peck. Mr. Hayter gave his ap-
proval to the weed spraying pro-
ject and said that he considered
mowing the roadsides made driving
much safer.
"The council, he went on, "made
a tour of all the township roads
each spring, and while they could
see much work that should be
done, their budget limited them to
the actual amount of work done
each year.' The councillor also
referred to the purchase of a trac-
tor and loader, and suggested that
the loader would be very useful,
particularly during the winter
when quantities of sand were re-
quired.
"Many culverts had been replac-
ed by new steel culverts. The
heavy snow drifts encountered on
Township roads," he said, " were
very hard on a grader and no
doubt made it necessary to replace
it oftener than if the machine was
used for grading only."
Melvin Graham, who was nomin-
ated by Mervin Hanley and John
McGregor, gave a brief report on
the bridge built on the second
concession at Bairds. The new
bridge takes the place of two brid-
ges originally at this corner. Can-
telon's bridge was also replaced
this year. Ron Coleman, of the
Parr Line, has been hired to-oper-

ate the township grader.
In a short open discussion it was
pointed out that the mill rate in
Stanley was considerably lower
than that in some of the nearby
townships. This is due in part to
the lake frontage being sold and
developed, with the consequent
higher taxe revenue.
John McGregor, re-elected school
trustee, felt that things had gone
smoothly during the past year. He
said another section, SS 13, wan-
ted to join the area.
Tom Baird, in presenting his re-
port, stated that he was retiring.
His place is being taken by Aldie
Mustard.
Menno Steckle discussed the op-
erational costs of the Clinton Dis-
trict Collegiate Institute. The sal-
ary the principal, he said was
$10,800 and the teachers ranging
from $8,800 down to the beginners
at $4,100.
There is a trend to reduce the
number of pupils per room to a
maximum of 30, he said. At pres-
ent there are 27 teachers in Clin-
ton,
Deputy Reeve Rau asked if the
present accomodation, with the
new addition, would last for the
next ten years. The answer was,
"No, it is testimated that enroll-
ment will double in the next ten
to 15 years."
Bob Peck, new High School
board member, said that he had at-
tended only two meetings, and that
the business was new to him, but
hoped to present a report next
year.
