six weeks of open weather, very
agreeable, and discarding any signs
of winter, if such storms would
bring nice weather as predicted for
six weeks, we certainly would wel-
come another one, some time dur-
ing the month of January. That
would shorten the cold, stormy
days, which are ahead of us during
the mid -winter season.
Mr. and Mrs. Morley Fournier,
and family, of London, spent the
weekend with the latter's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Corriveau, of
this highway,
A few of those who have cot-
tages along the lake, in different
summer resorts, took possession of
them over the weekend. They
took advantage of the summer like
weather the last few days.
Those who have been on the sick
list, we are glad to report are well
on the road to recovery, and with
a few more sunny days, they will
again feel themselves.
Mrs. Theresa Hartman, of the
village of Zurich, and her son
Cyril, were Sunday evening last
visitors with the former's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. A. Ducharrne, of the
Blue Water Highway.
VARNA NEWS
Word has been received of the
death of Lillian Dunkin, wife of
the late Harry Thompson, in her
77th year. The late Mrs, Thomp-
son, was a former resident of
Stanley. Four sons survive, Clar-
ence, of Vancouver, George and
William, of Sakatchewan, and
John, of Whitefish, Ontario. One
On Sunday evening last, a card
party was held in St. Joseph's Par-
ish Hall, sponsored by the C.W.L.
With a fair crowd in attendance,
prizes, as usual, were awarded to
the lucky ones. People like to at-
tend such gatherings, besides play-
ing cards, they chat, renew past
incidents, and it is also an occas-
ion to meet old friends, and make
new ones. The revenue from the
party also goes to a good cause.
The Jeffery contractors, and
their staff of men are busy moving
from one environment to another
to keep their work lined up. They
are hoping for the nice weather to
continue, for many more days, so
that they may complete the outside
work, then when colder weather
comes they will not be delayed.
Some rather severe thunder
storms, in the middle of the mon-
th of November, proved to be
very destructive, causing much pro-
perty damage, at the same time
leaving much work ahead for the
unfortunate ones, who were hard
hit by the passing storms.
However, many are happy over
the incident, especially those who
travel much over the highways,
and by -ways, and others, whose
daily occupations are mainly out
of doors. There is encouragement
for them, for at least those who
beleive in signs that are taken from
the older citizens.
Those old timers put much trust
in signs, which they inhereted from
their ancestors, centuries ago. To-
day, there are other means of pre-
dicting the future, and naturally
all the old sayings receive little
or no approval.
According to the old sayings, late
fall thunder storms will result in
