Watering lawns
By Ontario D. of A.
With water restrictions in many
areas, it is necessary to make the
best possible use of the water that
is available. Practising these
lawn -watering tips offered by the
Ontario Department of Agriculture
niay lessen "browning -off", which
scars summer lawns.

News Of Kippen District
(Correspondent, Mrs. Norman Long)
Mr. and Mrs. W. Hanes and fa- of an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs.
mily moved on Saturday from
Mrs. Clifton's house to P.1VI.Q.
quarters al RCAF Station, Clin-
ton.
Mr. and Mrs. Good, of Blyth,
visited on Tuesday afternoon with
Mr. and Mrs. Elston Dowson.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van Wier-
ren and family were Sunday guests
of Mr, and Mrs. G. Verburg, of
Auburn.
Soak your lawn. Water has to
penetrate several inches to be ef-
fective. Light applications of water
just make the grass roots grow to-
ward the surface. Here they are ea-
sy game for the hot, mid-day sun.
What's more, shallow -rooted weeds
thrive under such conditions. In-
sufficient watering does more
harm than good,
To know when the lawn is soak-
ed, place several pans in the area
to be watered. When about 11/2
inches of water shows in all pans,
you have applied enough.
Areas such as steep slopes and
terraces should be given a finer
spray because absorption there is
always slower.
Don't worry about watering a
lawn in mid-day. The sun cannot
harm, a freshly watered lawn un-
less the soil is poorly drained and
compacted. The only trouble is
that mid-day waterings result in
increased water losses due to eva-
poration.
This year's crop of sweet cher-
ries from Ontario orchards is light,
rrports the Markets Branch of the
Ontario Department of Agricul-
ture. So, when you see any in the
stores, don't miss the opportunity
to provide the family with this
special treat. Eaten out of hand,
sweet cherries are delicious as des-
sert or for between meal snacks
and also provide a holiday from
the kitchen for the cook.
Sour cherries too are scarce this
year. They are pie favourites and
for that reason are frozen fo la-
ter use in cherry pies. If cherry
pie is in demand at your home, as
it is in most, be sure to get an
adequate supply for freezer as
soon as you can.
Currants, gooseberries and rasp-
berries are now on the market.
Quality is good and vohmie fair
— about an average crop in On-
tario this year. Early clingstone
peaches are available now too.
All varieties of Ontario plums
are an extremely light crop this
year. Early Golden and Methley
are first to appear, followed by
Siro. These should be available
now, with Burbank putting in an
appearance next week.
When it comes to salad ingred-
ients,
naed-
ients, tomatoes are both plenti-
ful and good. In fact, the crop is
best in some time and with a good
deal more central packing this
year, improved, uniform quality is
predicted.
