Zurich Pupils in Running For B of W Scholarships Six -hundred and fifty-seven young Ontario students, two of whom are from the Zurich district, are in the running for the 13 Bank of Montreal Canada Centennial Scholarships which are to be awar- ded in their province in 1960, the bank has announced. Applications for the scholarships - each worth $750 in the first year - have now closed. The Ontario boys and girls are among 2,208 of this year's high- school graduates across Canada competing for the first year's 50 scholarships for the study of arts and sciences at Canadian univer- sities. Every application has to be accompanied by the recommend- ation of the student's principal, so that there has already been con- siderable "pre -selection" in the high schools. Final selections will be made in August by the ten provincial se- lection committees, each compos- ed .of leading educationalists from universities in the provinces con- cerned. The scholarships to be awarded this year are the first step in a seven-year plan announced by the B of M in May to provide bank - aided university study. The pro- gram will culminate in 1967, the year of the centennial of Canadi- an Confederation and the bank's 150th anniversary, when two final B of M centennial awards will be made, One award will be in arts and one in science - each in the amount of $5,000 for study any- where in the world. The scheme provides for a to- tal of .124 awards in the years 1960-67, ranging from $750 to $5,000. When the plan was an- nounced, G. Arnold Hart, presi- dent of the B of M, said the bank hoped the scholarships would pro- vide "a tangible and worthwhille observance of the national centen- nial to the future national advan- tage." tice State Farm Insurance office is now located at the rear of the Post Office in Zurich, in the re- sidence of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Denomrne, phone 33.
