BIG WEEK END
Traffic was heavy on the Blue -
water Highway during the long
week end people took advantage of
it, and many took to their summer
cottages, repairing and putting all
in order for their summer vaca-
tion which will begin for many in
the school holidays,

weeks we had many wet days, and
sunshine showers throughout its
time.
We in this surrounding received
little harm from it all, compared
with some other fields where
homes were demolished by high
and destructive winds and where
water outlets were plugged from
heavy rainfalls, causing the water
to back miles in -land making it
necessary for inhabitants to eva-
cuate their homes.
Many of us have not suffered
to that point. It has delayed the
farm work to some extent but with
little or no crop loss, as it had
not been planted.
The forty days of wet weather
cooked for, for those who believe
in the Good Friday sign, are co-
ming to an end and brighter days
are ahead, Farm plans will have
to be re-established as it is too
late for grain planting. Farmers
will find a way out of this seed-
ing delay; they will add acreage
to late crops such as buckwheat,
or will perhaps increase their bean
acreage. The whole change may
prove beneficial to them. It is
true the change may add to their
work, but considering it all it
may add to their income.
After Ascension Day we are
looking for the weather to adjust
itself again to greet us with sun-
ny days; at least this is the gen-
eral opinion of many.
Let not the recent rains lower
your spirit, for there might be
something brewing in the world to-
day much worse.

Apple Growers May
Suffer Losses Due
To Scab Fungus
Apple growers are faced with
the worst threat of scab since the
middle 1940's. Reason — six wet
days In a row during the second
week in May made ideal condi-
tions for the scab fungus to infect
the wet Ieaves and blossoms.
So warns C. B. Kelly, Ontario
Department of Agriculture bota-
nist. "Some growers never get a
protective spray on the trees be-
fore the rains started and the
ground was too soft to put on a
spray during the rain. These
sprays would have either preven-
ted or checked infection."
The scab fungus causes black
spots to form on the apple, says
Kelly. Scabby apples are not sale-
able — very little scab is per-
mitted even in the Iowest grade
of apples.
Is it too late to prevent fur-
ther infestation?
"Not so," says the botanist. "But
the grower will have to spray very
carefully from now on to prevent
the spread of the fungus,"
Use protective sprays before
the rain starts, he suggests. 'Use
eradicants if you doubt that you
got good protection. "The most ef-
fective eradieants are organic mer-
cury compounds. They will check
the growth of the scab infections
that have occurred during the
previous 72 hours," he states. Era-
dicants must be used if leaves
have folded since the last spray.
These new leaves will be unpro-
tected.

Many Restrictions
In Retailing Of
Maple Syrup
Persons buying maple syrup any-
where, and particularly at their
own doors from house-to-house
peddlers, should be wary of unla-
belled or mislabelled products and
of bargain prices, warns F. R. Arm-
strong, fruit and vegetable divis-
ion, Canada Department of Agri-
culture.
Maple suyrup, he says, is re-
quired by law to carry on the la-
bel the words "Maple Syrup", the
packer's name, the packer's ad-
dress, and the net weight of the
contents of the container.
In the average neighbourhood
store all maple products will pro-
bably be found to be properly la-
belled but housewives buying from
strangers will be well advised to
watch the labelling carefully and
above all, to make sure of the
identity of the vendor. His driv-
er's licence and his car licence
constitute excellent and ready
means of identification and if his
business is legitimate he will un-
derstand and appreciate of being
asked to produce them. If, for any
reason he fails to do so, the house-
wife should look elsewhere for
her maple products.

Inquiry at any local food stores
will indicate that good maple syr-
up and maple sugar are high-pric-
ed food items. The housewife will
do well to remember this fact
when considering offerings at bar-
gain prices. Much imitation maple
syrup is sold each spring under
the disguise of pure maple syr-
up and a little care on the part
of the consumers will do a great
deal to discourage this fraudu-
lent practice,
Summing up, Mr. Armstrong
says —
Know your supplier or at
least insist on identification.
Look at the label to see what
you are buying.
Look askance at bargain
prices.
