Group Discusses
African Conditions

The Arnold Circle of Carmel
Presbyterian C h u r c h, Hensall,
convened for their May meeting
last Tuesday evening in the church
schoolroom, with Mrs, B. Beaton
presiding. The worship was con-
ducted by Miss Hanah Murray and
Mrs. Gordon Schwalm with the
theme, "What Christ Is To Us".
Sacred passages were read by
Mrs. A. Orr and Mrs. Trevor Wil-
son. Miss Hannah Murray gave a
onte
paper on "Impact of Industry of
city life in Africa". Mrs. G. Vais
submitted an editorial on the
"Lack of Interest Hurting Mis-
sions". Mrs. Schwalm read an ar-
ticle on "Task of the Church in
Africa", Mrs. Gerald Bell read a
paper on "The Spotlight Shifted".
Members answered the roll call
with a proverb.
Thank you note was read from
Mrs, Bill Fink. Mrs. Harry Hoy
reported on the supply. Treasur-
er's report was given by Mrs. Ger-
ald Bell.
Arrangements were made for
the 30th anniversary of the Arnold
Circle on June 20th. Invitation
committee are Miss Hannah Mur-
ray, Mrs. Archie MacGregor and
Mrs. Harry Snell.

BIRTH OF NEW EMPRESS -- A new 323 -million flagship for
the Canadian Pacific Fleet was launched May 10th at Vickers -
Armstrongs yard, Newcastle, England, by Mrs. John G. Diefen-
baker, wife of Canada's Prime Minister. Christened "Empress of
Canada," the 1,050 -passenger liner will enter service between
the U.K.-Montreal run early in 1961. Above (left): — An estimated
15,000 persons watched as Mrs. Diefenbaker christened the "bnl-
bous bow" of the new Empress with a bottle of blended Canadian.
red wine. (right): — The 27,500 -ton liner slides down the slipway
into the Tyne River where she was taken in tow by tugs to her fit-
ting out berth. She will remain there until February for dry
docking and sea trials. The new liner is the third C.P.R. vessel
to bear the name "Canada" and will join the "Empress of England"
and "Empress of Britain" on trans-Atlantic service.
