"Powerful" is even not an ade-
quate term to cleaeribe the nov-
el "Tender Victory" by Taylor
Caldwell.
Johnny Taylor, an unmarried
Protestant clergyman, arrives in
his first parish with five orphan-
ed refugee children rescued in
post-war Europe. Two Of then are
of Roman Catholic parentage (It-
alian and French) and one is of
Jewish background. The foster -
father's decision is to have each
child retain his original faith.
Can he carry out his high aims
in the face of the active, violent
intolerence and hostility of vir-
tualy every resident of the small
Pennsylvania city?

that over 600 will be in attendance
at the Sunday afternoon lecture
by T. R., Jones, of Toronto, on
the subject, "Finding Peace in this
Troubled World." Highlight of the
Saturday sessions will be the bap-
tism of new Witnesses.
The week end seminar is a por-
tion of the intensive training
course that members of the organi-
zation undergo. Each member at-
tends from four to six hours of
bible meetings per week on the
congregation level, two circuit as-
semblies each year and one dis-
trict convention annually. Two of
this year's many assemblies will
be held in Briggs Stadium, De-
troit, and at the C.N.E. Stadium,
Toronto, where attendances will
probably range from 20,000 to
40,000.
The Witnesses contain no cler-
gy -laity classes but rather stress
the necessity of each member be-
coming a practicing field minister
and accepting other congregation
duties. All activities are performed
voluntarily and without remunera-
tion. Collection plates are never
passed in the congregations.
The organization had 871,000
practicing Witnesses in more than
175 countries and islands, at the
close of the last service year, Au-
gust 31, 1959. This figure increases
by 10 to 20 per cent each year.
The organizations' chief publica-
ton is the Watchtower magazine,
printed twice a month in 56 lan-
guages; May 1 printing was 3,800-
000.
L. A. Hoffman, Exeter, is pre-
siding minister of the Exeter con-
gregation. Mr. Hoffman operates
Superior Maintenance Service as
his secular work. He moved to Ex-
eter in June, 1959, from Prince-
ton, B.G., to serve with the Exe-
ter Congregation.
