Nanga Parbat—Five attempts by
well-planned expeditions, at great
cost of lives and wealth, over a
period of 50 years between 1895
and 1938, to reach the summit of
this 26,620 foot peak in the Him-
alayas above the altitude of per-
petual winter, ended in failure.
Not until 1953 was the peak
scaled, and then by only one
member of the large expedition.
The book was written by the lea-
der of the expedition, Dr. Karl
Herrligkoffer, and translated into
English by Eleanor Brockett and
Anton Ehrengweig. It includes a
large number of photographs.
Turkey Market Plan
Vote Fails 'To Carry
Ontario turkey producers failed
to carry a sufficient majority on
a recent plebiscite which would
have permitted the Ontario Turkey
Association to set up a modified
market plan allowing the Associat-
ion to levy a fee on producers for
the purpose of advertising and oth-
erwise promoting the sale of Ont-
ario grown turkeys.
Out of 920 producers eligible
to vote only 447 cast ballots, repre-
senting 48.5% of those eligible.
Vote in favor of the plan was
53.2%, falling short of the 66 2-3%
required to make the plan operati-
ve. Some 238 producers were in
favour of the levy with 209 voting
against the proposal.
Following the Women's Mission-
ary meeting the Women's Associ-
ation held a short business discus-
sion on Thursday night.
It was decided to buy a number
of new chairs for the church. It
was also mentioned that the sp-
ring bazaar, to be held in Zurich
Town Hall this year, would be
the second Saturday in April.
