Huron County Health Unit Discusses
New Type Milk. at Annual Meeting
Chairman for the Huron County
Health Unit for 1960, elected at
the .inaugural meeting last Tues-
day is Baillie Parrott, Morris
Township. Other members include
John Morrissey, government rep-
resentative, and by, appointment of
county council, J. Kerr, Winghum;
J. Willits, Turberry and D. Bauer-
man, McKillop; secretary -treasur-
er is J. G. Berry, Goderich.
In other business, the Board de.
ferred decision regarding a new
type milk product pending furth-
er information from the Depart-
ments of Health and Agriculture.
The following report was given
at the meeting by Dr. R. M. Aldis,
medical officer for Huron County:
"With the advent of the new
year, we have been pleased to co-
operate in a new and challenging
program. This is the provision of
an additional home nursing visit
to the cancer patient—on request
of the family physician, the family
or the Cancer Foundation. Actual-
ly the cancer patient is just one
of many types of chronic illnesses
to which health unit services
might be expanded with further
study. and backing;
"Other .services, however, should
not be neglected.. ,E'or example,
experience is now showing that
problems like polio' are still with
us despite vaccination. The pro-
tection of the preschool and school
Child may even increase the haz-
ard to unprotected adults since it
is possible for the children so im-
munized to still act as carriers.
Service in Carmel Church was
held ' in the church schoolroom,
owing to the decrease in atten-
dance. 3 ^
Services in the United Church
was attended by less than half the
number that usually attend.

Nor has the incidence of TB de-
clined in measure with its mortal-
ity. The revival of interest in tu-
berculin testing, however, offers
hope of further 'control of this
disease: At the present time this.
test is offered annually by the Un-
it
nint to secondary school students.
Opportunity for all citizens to be
tested will be offered by the mass
survey of the Department and
Tuberculosis Association which is
scheduled for July.
The Board will be interested to
know that the nursing homes lic-
ensed under. county by-law are
regularly inspected by the Health
Unit. We are pleased that in most
instances the compliance has been
excellent. One or two do present
problems in that their nursing
staff is part time and used irreg-
ularly. The aspect of safety from
fire is handled by the local fire
departments, some of whom have
already reviewed a plan of action
in the event of conflagration or
similar emergency.
Influenza is present in the
county but not yet in the propor-
tion reported from some of the
border cities. A reinvasion of the
Asian strain which swept through
these parts several years ago is
very probable, since it has already
been indentified below us, In the
fall of 1957, this mild type of in-
fluenza
nfluenza closed many schools and
industries for short periods. Fatal-
ities were very few. Provided that
no spontaneous variation occurs in
the character of this virus, its ef-
fect should be less apparent in
our comrnundties in 1960."
