A. DOYLE, St. Boniface R.C. Church, Zurich If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." —Luke 9: 23 In these words our Blessed Sav- iour gives us a very simple rec- ipe for saving our souls. There are two ingredients. First of all, there is self-denial. Everybody practices self-denial, We start off each day with self-denial when we forsake the comfort of our bed< We are continually making acts of self-denial throughout the day. Right reason demands self- denial, if we are going to accom- plish anything. The sad thing a- bout the whole thing is that the intention or purpose of our count- less acts of self-denial is very often purely selfish. We fail to refer them to God. Consequently they have no more supernatural value than a mass of snow sliding off •a roof. They give no intention- al glory to God. This is all wrong. St. Paul tells us that we must OBITUARY. Zurich Citizens News 1 direct 'to the glory of God every- thing that we do, whether it be only eating or any other act. Therefore, the first part of the recipe for the good and happy life is to offer all our self -denials to God. • This can be done at the beginning of the day, in morning prayer. We can renew our offer- ing many times during the day, simply by lifting our hearts and mind to God. The second part of the recipe is also simple. We must take up' our cross daily. In other words, we must live our life one day at a time. Yesterday is gone, and we cannot re -live it. And, we cannot live tomorrow today. The secret, then, is to make the best of to- day. We must shoulder today's burdens and carry them cheer- fully for the glory of God. In fact, we should live each day as if it were our last day on earth. If God were to tell you that to- day would be your last day here below, it ds certain that you would want to make today as pleasing to God as you could possibly make it. There, then, we have the recipe: Offer all your thoughts, words and actions to God. Live one day at a time. The result? We shall not live apart from our Blessed Saviour. We shall be very close to Him. We shall follow Him. We are His sheep. We shall be safe and well cared -for, if we stay close to our Shepherd. Church Directory St. Peter's Lutheran Church Zurich Rev.
