Flanders Prance, May, 26th, 1916
Dear Mrs. Appel:—
• Just 'received.
yourlettei, yesterday dated Marsh, 80th
1916. It was a long time getting
here, as I was on a _ Military polies
jobin one of our ruined cities when
it arrived. ' Then I went to a hospital,
after making a tour in the trenches,
eothe letter was sent to a number of
places before it reached. me; however
I am atyfullyglad to hear from. you
We are having splendid weather at
present, it is quite warm, and it cer-
tai;uly is a great pleabam of having
nice weather. Team in splendid health
at present.
The reason I was admitted to the
hospital' was only a case of sprained
feet, you will understand marching a
number of.milee to the trenches only
to find two feet of water and mud in
thein will undoubtly make one's feet
sore, yet we have to be contented with
these kind of hardships as well as
many others. We are quite used to
it now, so there is very little complain-
ing to be heard. It is close on to
eight months since'we first went into
action and one would think it would
reduce your weight, but such is. ° not„
the case with ins; if there is anis:,
change in weight I have gained slightly;
which is certainly surprising as this
is an awful strain ob. one's physical.
condition and nerves, .\Vheu the., b3'g
Jack Johnston's and Coal Boxes come
with in close range of es it sure makes
the earth tremble, also deafensone for
a short time. If you were to see some
of the sights arounrt tete .I can assure
you that it would not be forgotten
very.easily. To see sights such as
houses, fine large Cathedrals, Museum
Balls, etc., worth millions of dollars
lying in' ruins whirls in all probability
will never be rebuilt. Jest think of
the k3elgaiiis having to leavetheir
homes, leaving all their furniture and
'garments ainanget the fallendebris.
Geitnan Kultur'e'is sure an awfuLl
policy: 1f She you rig men who are
not in khaki could see the shove men-
tioned, they could'n'tresist otherwise
