Correspondent calls attention to the
fact that 100 years ago, 1.81.6, was "a
year without a spanner." Will history
repeat itself this year, being one hun-
dreth anniversary of that momentous
year? In 1816 it snowed every month
in the year. An old roan in Kentucky
said he had heard his grandfather
talk of that year and one incident
had impressed itself on his mind. idis
grandfather said that he and his "girl'
:carted Lir a Fourth of July oelnbrati-
' n, but were compelled to turn back
,n account of a terrible snow storm -
\ice outlook.
The R1ice Trustees have received
• the contract for a supply of Hydro
♦ Electric Paver an 1 it has been
duly accepted. The price to Zurich
is $69.34. This is a little lower than
the the estimated cost and when the
system is installed and more po wer is
used, it is expected that the rate will
gradually decrease, It is not expected
that an early start will be made in
extending the rower lines to Dasbood
and Zurich, as the Commission is
meeting with consiJerable difficulty
in obtaining the material necessary
for the work, owing to the war. •

AN EQUITABLE ADJIlUST' ENT
"Why should you charge $1.50 for a
small weekly newspaper when we can
get a large daily for $2.002?"'was asked
of us the other day, The. large even-
ing daily is sold at a loss at $2.00, and
the large morning daily is sold at a
loss at $3 00. It is sold at a loss to
gain subscribers. The more subscrib-
ers e, daily has the snore advertising
it can get and the larger rate for
sdveitising. The advertiser thus, has
to pay for the difference between what
You pay for the paper and what it
really costs, and then be divides it
among his customers. You pay for it
in the long run. The local paper has
no such large advertising patronage.
It is smaller now than it was. The
weekly is doing now what the daily
wilt have to do sooner or later, make
the subscriber pay the full cost of his
paper instead of making the advertiser
pay a part of it.
