John Hartley, Aged 73, Has Record in
London.
After spending 37 years ill prison,
John Hartley, aged '73, has been sent
to jail again for 12 months at the
London (England) sessions.
Hartley's criminal career establishes
a record in its way. His first sen-
tence, a week in jail, was imposed in
1855 when he was only 21 years old.
Two years later he got three months.
Thirteen other sentences followed,
mostly for burglary. In his old age,
the sentences were shortened. But he
has already served six months during
the present year. Hartley is so feeble
that he hacl to sit in a chair during his
trial, instead of standing up, as is the
custom here. Ile pleaded guilty to

Japan has helped out the English
shopping season by providing the be-
zaars with enough toys to supply the
war deficit. Before the war Germany
controlled almost the entire British
toy trade. English toy industries have
since started up, but could not fill all
the orders from the shops: Then an
importing firm sent samples, of, Ger-
man toys to Japan. In some ways the
Japanese output has exceeded expec-
tations.
The new Japanese toys include
clockwork animals, such as jumping
dogs and horses, cheap speaking dolls
and imitation skin animals. While
not a musical people in the European

Ileavy. Weight on Old Age
When people realize the injurious
effects of tea and coffee and the bet-
ter health that a change to Postum
can bring, they are usually glad to
lend their testimony for the benefit of
others.
"My mother, since her early child-
hood, was an inveterate coffee drinker,
had been troubled with her heart for a
number of years and complained of
that `weak -all -oyer' feeling and sick
stomach." ('The effects of tea on the

ago, in the processes of evolution the
tuataras of other lands finally de-

and the original tuatara gradually be-

Commander Powers -,5y, ingtonw the
American naval attache at London,
who was ordered to Washington to lay
before the General Board the inform-
ation which he has gathered concern-

the Navy Department.
Commander Symington's report may
be summarized in the following man-
llei':
Admiral Jellicoe is virtually dicta-
tor of the navy, and the entire or-
ganization has absolute faith in him.
His activities are, shrouded in mys-
tery, but the navy is satisfied that.
when the test comes he will be pre-
pared to obliterate the German fleet.
Every available yard in the British
Islands is working right around the
clock in turning out ships at an un-
precedented rate. Great Britain has
laid down or completed more vessels
since the war began than the entire
tonnage in the American navy. This
means that within a year the British
navy will be about 300 per cent.
stronger than America's, unless Ger-
many destroys a section of the fleet.
