COUNTY COUNCIL
The Officers of the 161st Huron
Overseas Battalion and men now
being recrtrited were all born and rais
ed in the County of Huron, and litany
nave sacrificed their positions and bus-
iness to give their services and time
to their Empire, their country, and
their Flag, A Committee of officers,
a member of Parliament and Aldyoi'
Reid of Godefich, composed a Comm
ittee to interview the County Council
and Warden, and invite them to assist
in forming a Receuiting League, each
Reeve to act as Chairman for each
Municipality, call meetings and help
recruit a Battalion of one thousand
men for overseas service. What was
their answer? Nn, we think the Gover
nment .honlddo this, we will not ase
ist in any way to aid the officers in
raising a battalion to protect the l oys
at the front, and not assist in br•in;iirk
this war speedily to n close.
When the Council was asked for a
grant of money if they would not give
their services in recruiting they might
pay. The answer w,is the same. No.
Tho G„yeinment should do this.
What, Hina, we ask, is the County
Colwell, but the Government of the
people of Huron?
Some of the members said the Towns
had a lot of bums loafing around, why
do they not enlist, and leave the rural>
boys at-home. How about the sonsof.
the town and village representatives of
the Huron County Council wbo are
nob tilling the land? Have they en-
listed, and have they no higher ideal
of Patriotism than they exhibited in
the recent meeting by their actions
and words? There is only one course
for patriotic people, to pursue, elect
representatives who are manly enough
to respect the men who are fighting
their battles and their sons battles and
who if they do not offer their services,
will at least give, in lieu of this, finan-
cial assistance. Soldiers and people
rally to the good old County of Huron
and show the County Council that if
they have no feelings of Patriotism
and respect for the boys at the front,
we haye.
We once had great respect for the
ideas of some of the members of the
County Council who opposed the ass-
istance to recruiting the 161st Batt
but to the present time they do not
seem to realize that the County of
Huron is a part of the British Empire'
which shouid assist in protecting and
and doing its share in efforts air,
money in bringing this war to a spear;
ay and victorious close..
In addition to the Christmas Tree
and other good things provided by the
Muskoka Free Hospital for Consump-
tives, for all patients at Christmas
time, the soldiers in residence there
were extra well looked after, being pre-
sented with moccasins, fruit, and other
articles, by ladies' Societies of Graven
hurst, Newmarket and Toronto.

merits to wire the houses. The wiring
will have to be done to come up to a
standard and will have to be inspected
by an inspector sent out by the com-
mission. The cost will be according to
the amount of work necessary and the
number oflights to be installed.
The Brussels Post, says: John

but has no notion of feeling old. Be-
tween service at Grey township muni-
cipal board, before be carie to Brussels
and his tenure of office in town, he
figures out 28 years in public service
in this department of work. It is not
wondered at that he is a sort of ency-
clopaedia at the County Council when
it comes to the date of the past.

Sir Sam Hughes' Mother Refused to
Let Operation Go On.
"Brother Jim left out the most in-
teresting part of the story," said Sir
Sam Hughes the other day, discuss-
ing a story which appeared recently
concerning the °bravery with which
he underwent an operation to his leg
When a youngster.
"Of course I was brave. 1 didnt'
know any better," remarked the
Minister of Militia. "But the best
part of the story was about mother,
You know they we—) really going 1.0
cut off my leg, and the doctors kept
the door of my room locked while
they were pr'0paring for the opera-
tion. Presently there came a bang-
ing and kicking at the door. It was
mother. 'Let me inl Let me in!'
she was crying. The doctor, a gruff
old surgeon, said to his assistant:
'Don't take any notice of her.' i3ut
mother was so insistent that at last
the doctors were compelled to open
the door to her. She same into the
room, took one look at the case of
surgical instruments, and then kick-
ed them all over the room. 'You're
not going to cut my boy's leg off,'
she exclaimed. 'I would rather see
him in the little churchyard yonder.'
Mother had her way. The leg was al-
lowed to stay."
"Get -Rich -Quick Wallingford, who
was he?" asked Sir Sam the other day
of his staff when the conversation
had turned to fiction. An officer un-
dertook to enlighten the Minister of
Militia.
"I haven't read a story since I was
a boy," exclaimed the general. "I
haven't had time since then. When
I did read stories I always said to
myself that if I couldnt' write a bet-

Have you ever been aboard a boat
