Operated With Lamp When Bomb Wrecked Electric Plant. Air raids are becoming so frequent that inhabitants of small towns on the east coast of England are getting used to them. The London Lancet tells the following story of an -opera- tion performed during one of the German raids: "During one of the recent air raids on the east coast a well-known sur- geon was performing an operation of tracheotomy at a nursing home when the German aircraft came over the place at night. The town electric cur- rent was at once cut off. All the' lights went out suddenly, and this too at the very moment when the surgeon in question.was opening the windpipe. Fortunately it was not the first attack delivered against this place, a fishing and sea bathing resort. "Taught by experience, the operator had made it a matter of habit to warn his nurses and other assistants that lamps should be kept ready for use during all operations which had to be undertaken at night. This precaution may have saved the small patient's life, With .15ut : a trifling delay the tracheotomy was completed and the child is now doing well. "To have performed so delicate an operation in such circumstances is a considerable feat, for the raid was a serious one, a good many bombs were dropped, several persons were killed and injured and the feeling at the mo- ment was naturally one of intense ap- prehension. Some of the bombs hit a house in the neighborhood, the resi- dence of another well-known practi- tioner. Luckily no one was at home at the time and the medical practi-, tioner got off with the destruction of a certain amount of property. The experience recorded will no doubt in- sure the taking by medical men gen- erally of the precautions which in this case had been fortunately ob- served." FEED CHILDREN On Properly Selected Food. It Pays Big Dividends. If parents will give just a little in- telligent thought to the feeding of their children the difference in the health of the little folks will pay, many times over, for the small trou- ble. A mother writes: "Our children are all so much better and stronger than they ever were ,before we made a change in the character of the food. We have quit using potatoes three times a day with coffee and so much meat. "Now we give the little folks some fruit, either fresh, stewed, or canned, some Grape -Nuts with cream, occa- sionally some soft-boiled eggs, and some Postum for breakfast and sup- per. Then for dinner they have some neat and vegetables. "It would be hard to fully describe the change in the children, they have grown so sturdy and strong, and we attribute this change to the food ele- ments that, 1 understand, exist in Grape -Nuts and Postum. "A short time ago my baby was teething and had a great deal of sto- mach and bowel trouble. Nothing seemed to agree with him until I tried Grape -Nuts softened and mixed with rich milk and he improved rapidly and got sturdy and well." "There's a Reason." Nance given by Canadian Postum Co., Windsor, Ont. Ever read the above letter ? .A new olio appears from time to time. They are genuine, .true, and full of human latereat, ARMENIANS PERSECUTED. Those Who Escaped Kurds Said to Oncenr b t e lt`ti vations. "The Turks are gradually but effec- tively exterminating the Armenian people," asserts the Dedeaghatch cor- respondent of the London Times, "The modus operandi is to send from each Armenion village day by day as many persons as a train can carry. When they arrive at Konish, or some adjacent station, they are turned out and an eccort furnished over the Taurus Mountains. "Once on the other side, they are supplied with enough food for a few days and told to continue their jour- ney to the neighborhood of Mosul, as they will now be in perfect safety. The region is nothing but a desert, and before many hours marauding. bands of Kurds or Bedouins rob 'and pillage these helpless men, women and children, so that those who are not actually slain die of hunger or thirst. Not one ever reaches the intended destination, for should any one try to escape in another direction, Turkish shepherds have orders to shoot them at sight. "Many distracted mothers throw their children into the Euphrates ra- ther than see them suffer. Some even sell them for what they will bring be- fore starting on their journey. "A widely known American mis- sionary who arrived at Constantino- ple the first week in September, de- clared he saw as many as 15,000 Ar- menians collected around one station waiting to be sent on this journey from which none would ever return. The instruments used by the French florists to prolong the life of cut flow- ers "and remove imperfections are as numerous and delicate as those on a well-equipped dressing -table. They in- lude scissors of all sizes and shapes, mall cutting -pliers and pincers of any kinds, brushes, atomisers, prays, and bottles, containing vari- us gums. A withered leaf or even ne poorly developed ruins the ap- earance of a rosebud, consequently the one is cut off, and the other, is ossible, is reshaped. The buds are iso pierced as near the base of the owers as possible, with minute wires which keep the leaves in place., An nstrument very similar to a curling- ron is used to dress a faulty leaf. One of the means employed to pro- ong the life of the flower is to re- eve the anthers, so as to prevent the preading of the pollen, for, if ferti- ization is allowed to take place, the ower has fulfilled its mission and eon fades. In flowers of the lily or- er the anthers are removed for still nother reason. They develop such n abundance of yellow pollen that it falls and taints the leaves, thus mar- ing the spotless white beauty of the ower. • The stems of flowers that be - in to hang their heads are placed in ery hot water for about five minutes, nd then are placed in a dark and cool lace for about an hour. INCREASE IN USE OF SHELLS,. c s m s 0 0 P P a fl 1 m s 1 fl s d a a fl g v a p Germans Fired 817,000 in 1870, French 100,000 in a Day. Interesting statistics concerning munitions of war are given by a wri- ter in the Lokal Anzeiger of Berlin in an article in which the great outcry for more munitions in England and in France is denounced as being,insin- cere and caused chiefly by a desire to explain and excuse the failure of the Allies every time they have assune'd the offensive. The writer attempts to prove that heavy artillery has not, in spite of the prevailing opinion to the contrary, taken the place of the individual sol- dier in modern warfare. He quotes in support of this argument the bom- bardment announced by the German General Staff on March 10, when the Allies used 100,000 shells in twenty- four hers on a front of eleven kilo- meters. The cost of this bombard- ment is esilnated at $1,625,000. "In the Franco-German war," he says, "a German battery fired on an average 200 shells from each gun. In the Manchurian war the average had already risen to twice that figure. These totals are far exceeded by those of the present war. In the whole of the war of 1870-71 the Ger- man artillery fired 817,000 shells. Of these 470,000 were used in the sieges of French fortresses and 338,000 on the field. Of the latter total 10 per cent. was fired off in the battle of St. Privat alone. In the Russo-Japanese war the total was 954,000," CHILDHOOD CONSTIPATION Baby's Own Tablets will promptly cure constipation of childhood.
