meeting of the Huron county council
today it was decided to issue debentur-
es to raise $50,000 for the patriotic
fund, and besides, from now until the
end of March, to grant $6,000 per
month to the same cause.
I+'rorn April 1 until the fund accru-
ing from the debenture issue are ex-
hausted, $5,000 a month will be de-
voted to the fund. When the fund is
exhausted, other arrangements will be
treacle if necessary.
Heads of the several patroitic soci-
eties from all over the county attended
the meeting." Throughout the session
enthusiasm was marked.
An independent patriotic meeting of
prominent townspeople was held in the
town hall tonight and the sentiment
which prevailed indicated that patri-
otic work would not be neglected. The
splendid success which attended the
recent jam shower under the auspices
of the Red Cross Society was reported.
Passing of A- Scruton,
Hensall.
The deepest regret is felt by the
residents of the community at large
at the death of Alfred Scruton, which
sad event took place at his home in
Hensall on Monday. Deceased had
reached the age of 47 years and 5
months and his death removes one of
Hensall's most popular and energetic
businessmen. He had been in poor
health for some time, being a sufferer
from cancer of the stomach, but the
best of medical advice and ekill could
afford him no relief. He gradually
became weaker and on Monday the
end came, Ile successfully conducted
the flour, feed and coal business in
I :`ensall for Marty years, but disposed
of ita few weeks ago owing to ill -health
He was very active in all matters per-
taining to the welfare of the town's
interest and the citizens of Hensall
feel his loss very keenly. The funeral
was held on Wednesday afternoon,
interment taking place in the Union
Cemetery. The Masonic order, of
which deceased was a member, con-
ducted the services. The deepest sy-
mpathy is felt for the bereaved fami-
ly in their sad bereavement,
EXETER FAIR
The annual exhibition of the Exe ter
Fair was held on Monday and Tuesd-
ay of this week. Although the weather
was not favorabie the attendance was
quite large and the various classes
were well filled. The horse show was
especially good, much keen competiti-
on being forthcoming in this class,
and the animals shown were of an ex-
cellent type. All other classes were
also well filled, especially in the in•
door department, and the exhibits, as
a whole, mere up to former years.
,ZURICH FAIR
As we go to press everything is
shaping up to an ideal day for the
annual exhibition of the Hay Branch
Agricultural Society. The indoor ex-
hibitihave all been placed in position,
judging is going on, and all things are
being got in readiness for the big day,
Thursday.
The display in the show house is
well up to former years, although
some of the classes, such as apples and
potatoes and some other fruits, ars not
so well represented. A number of
fine exhibits have also been placed in
the indoor department by business
Hien of the village which are well
worthy of attention.
Next week's paper will contain a
fullreport of the fair, the races and
the prize -winners in all classes.
