There ie no business about which "" there are so nanny )misconceptions, no crop against which there is so much unjust prejudice, no plant which can be made so generally benificial to the country. In respect to other industries we can say that the competi hien of Europe - greater use of machinery in Americae an producers has been offset by the It is not so of flax. Partly because ` . of the lack of enterprise among mill - men, : because of the aloofness of our Dominion Government, and because of the peculiar conditions and nems' shies of flex culture and manufacture, the fibro flax business in Canada has fallen behind in the march of progress. Though this century has become not- able . as a century of organisation among industries and in almost everer other sphere of human activity, flax men hays failed to until recently to see t he necessity of co-operation and un- ited effort for the common good. The European war, in upsetting the flax producing centers of Europe and thereby raising the prices offered for spinning flax fiber, has spurred Can- adian flex growers to seize this grand opportunity for making flax once more, and permanently, an outstand- ing Canadian crop, & To' accomplish this . purpose the farmer and the flax factor must work hand in hand. In some sections the farmers have somehow got the idea that flax takes more fertility out of the soil than other crops in proportion to the, returns. There are various ways of explaining how this error came alinnt, There is no need to is 'ye - cite cite t i i. The fact remains that flax is easter on the soil per dollar of crop than any other of the common farm crops. Statistics compiled by the Do- minion Department of Agriculture, and by other official bodies in many conntries where flax is grown, prove this beyond all doubt. When farmers generally realize these facts, as they have already done in most enterpris- ing localities, there will be as much favor shown flax as there has previous- ly been antagonism. to the crop. Public spirited citizens see far more in flax culture than is embraced in the above discussion. They see how im 44 4444 4#4414 44 44 Dr. E. S. The basic questions as to whether fax is arsuitable crop for our soil and climate of Southern Canada have longsinee•been settled by the experi- ence of eyery seventy fax mill men in Canada during the last half century. Their testimony, confirmed by the statements of fax buyers who come to Canada from New England and Il;nrope, is that as good fiber fax can he grown in Canada as is produced auywhers'in the world. Why it : has often been a poor crop is now found to be attributable to causes with which soil= and weather have hadnntbing to' ,lo.
