Ottaiva, August 4. A special press
bulletin issued today by Census and
' Statistics office gives the - following
report on the condition of field crops
in Ontario at the end of July as sum-
ari 'ad from telegrams received from
the.Dominion Farms anb Stations in
accordance with arrangements made
between the Departments of Trade and
00$11meree and Agriculture.
From Essex County it is reported
that to the north excessive rains have
damaged corn and hoed crops; in the
south' there is no damage and there is
promise of splendid crops. Wheat
and barley are all harvested,- ..Oats
are a splendid crop and are now
being harvested. From Galt in Wat-
erloo County exceptionally heavy
rainfalls are reported, hay and wheat
are being harvested under difficulties,.
Barley and hoed crops never looked
better. Oats are heavy but show con-
siderable smut. Brooklin, Ontario
County, reports showery weather all
the month and ` no damage.. Fall
wheat well ripened, is being harvested
Barley is an average and oats are a
full crop. ;Corn and root crops are
doing well. Pasture is good, but hay
is light and injured by rain. In'
Eastern Ontario the grain erops
have filled very well and promise
better than an average yield. The
hay crop has turned out better than
was expected in June. Corn and roots
and all hoed crops have made good
growth during July, especially corn,
which has made a remarkable growth
due to the showers of the earlier part
and the high temperature which
prevailed during the whole of the
month.

Ivan L Stewart, grandson -of Mr
and Mrs. James Green, met . with an
accident which might have proven
serious while at Grand Bend last
Saturday. A wolf owned by IV 1r Herb
Smith, was tied to a tree when the
little fellow cane too close and the
wolf jumped upon him. Luckily Mr
Smith was on hand and threw the
wolf off and the child escaped with a
few scratches and one cut in the ear.
The wolf e was shot instantly.

uring and cultivation of their potato
crop, but generally neglected methods
of seed selection or breeding. Regard-
ing live stock it is universally recogni-
zed, that it pays to put forth every
effort toward improving the strain
by careful selection and breeding.
The field of plant breeding and selec ti-
on offers to every farmer an interesting
and .profitable diversion, and it should
become the farmer's hobby.
Experiments have shown that pot-
atoes grown from hill -selected seed
will give an increase of from 80 to 50
per cent over the average yield, The
hill selection method consists in mak-
ing individual hill selections in the
field, at digging time, selecting, of
course, for uniformity in size and a
maximum number of merchantable
tubers. Each hill may be given a
number and kept and planted separate-
ly the -next year to permit comparison
when the progeny is harvested. An-
other good plan is to go through the
field in auturfin just before the tops
die down and mark, by a twig or stake
the hills showing most vigor and re-
sistance to disease, When harvest
conies the'marked hills may be saved
for seed, discarding the hills which do
not come up to standard, Enough
may be selected in this way each
year to plant a plot sufficiently large
to supply the seed for the whole crop
the following year,
No fanner is too poor to have his
own, breeding patch of grain or potato-
es.. Indeed, if they but knew, farmers
can ill afford to be without the breed-
ing plot to supply seed for their own
planting. ---.F. 0. N.
