DIRECT TAXATION For the first time in the history of the Province of Ontario a direct tax by the provincial government will be imposed as a special war tax. One mill on the dollar will be levied on all assessable property. This will mean a tax of $1,800,000 on the province. SUDDEN DEATHS Mrs J Jacobe passsed suddenly away on Friday last at the home of her:son, John, of the Sauble Line, in her 80th year. Deeeased was one of the oldest residents of this section and was held in deep respect by her many friends, The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, the interment taking place in the Bronson Line cemetery. The January thaw was a month late this year, and arrived on Tuesday. Rain fell con tinously all clay and it was a very unpleasant day to be out. Mr William Klopp who has purchased the house vacated by Mr Ferdinand Hess, is moving into it this week, Mr and Mrs Church will occupy the house vacated by Mr and 111rs Klopp. Messrs J. J. Merger and W. Bender are going into bean growing on an ex- tensive scale the coming season, They have contracted for nearly two hund- red acres of land, one hundred near Seaforth and the balance in this vicinity and this will all be sown in beans. When stn inch of rain has fallen it means that the amount of water de- scending in that particular shower would cover the surrounding territory to a depth of one inch, providing of Course that ib did nob run away or soak into the ground. It means that on one acre, water enough to fill more than 800 barrels of 45 gallons each has fallen. This quantity of water weighs more than 110 tons. T. DUNLOP, Manager On Friday evening last the residents of Zurich and vicinity were deeply shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mr Valentine Kochems. Deceased was in his usual health and in the ev- ening hail taken a walk clown town. He dinned home about eight o'clock and was sitting beside the table talking with his wife, when she noticed that he was in distress. She hurriedly summoned assistance but before the doctor's arrival life was extinct. Heart failure was apparently the cause of his death. Mr Kochems was a carpen- ter by trade and was of a hard work- ing disposition and during his life time had imide many warm friends. He was only a few Months over 57 years of age and his sudden demise is keenly felt by his many relatives and friends. His widowand two broth- ers, Frank, of Zurich, and John, of the west, are his only survivors. To the deeply bereaved widow is extended the deepest sympathy of the com- munity. The funeral was held an Monday to the Roman.Catholic ceme- tery, Rev. Father A Stroeder officiating The large attendance showed the deep respect and esteem in which the tato Mr Kochems was held by all. BORN.
