Meeting the Needs of Long or Short • • Grain.. The binder. tableor the• butting at- tachment can be shifted to meet the needs of long or short grain, avid the binder operator must be alive to the making•01 the necessary adjustments ;ir the bundles will not be of a. des.ir- ablens halve and tightness. The bind- ono attachment with its -twine run needle and keotter will give highly efficient service if given reasonable attention by way of oiling and proper adjustment. The binding attachment Parts rust very easily during periods of idleness, so -liberal applications of • a heavy mineral oil or grease to all parts not protoeied by paint will save me machine, will save time, labor, and temper. trust can 'be removed by sandpaper, but harvesting ma- chine., were never intended for such ire—net. Tite wooden slats ,that Cohn an important part of the cau- vas conveyors will sometimes tear loose. This is caused' by the frame and rollers not being in.proper align- ment or square.. This ditliculty is overcome by adjusting the erase braces of the frame until it ie. square and the rollers in alignment. The Transmission of Power.: The power for operating the vari- ous parts of the grain binder is tran- smitted by cbiiin and sprocket, the various units being provided with tighteners. If tha various chains are not run at propertension, treuble i will follow. If too tight the liuks will break, or the draft will be heavy. If too loose the machine Will le: drivenwith a jerky motion. If the cchains are just slack enough so such can not be taken off by _ hand. 'when the machineis not running, they will usually be satisfactory when 'in mo- tion.. Chain links and • sprockets should be well oiled at all points of contact. 'Missing sheaves or failure to tie the.bundle is a common trou- ble, 'usually, due to the operator's failure to make the adjustments necessary to give full efficiency to the Lying mechanism. If the needle fails to carry the twine far enough over that it may be grasped by the twine disc, :a knot will nxot be tied, 'since but cue endis held. This condition- is generally easily recognized by the twine being knotted in a Loop at one end, the other end being free. When the twine disc is held too tight by the awlip and spring, it will in turn hold the twine so tight as to pinch it off atl`te caws a' failure to tie. This eon- -di -dot. is .generally indicated by one bnd og the band being frayed. The loosening of the spring that holds the twine -disc will remedy this fault. If tee twine disc is loysened too much, the knot can not be tied; this condi- lion is generally indicated by both ends of the twine band being frayed.
