A HAZARDOUS EXPEDITION
On February 23 the fishermen be-
tween Bayfield and Grand Bend suff-
ered a heavy loss. It is estimated,
that between tWo hundred andtwo
hundred and fifty nets were swept a-
way, including about seventy-five
from St. Joseph and vicinity. This
heavy loss was occasioned by a heavy
wind during the night of February
22-23, which, broke the ice into pieces
and scattered it
with netso
to,froze
between three to five milesout in;the
lake •

peu with an axe, a sled, a boat, rope
bag and a niteen foot uoard, they set,
out. By jumping from one caate•ot
ice to another, using boat to ;traverse
water and then dragging it on sled
over ice, they succeeded in reaching.
about two miles out. Dragging the
boat proved to be too strenuous work.
They decided to leave one of the pale.
ty with the boat and the three remain
ing, with axe, bag,. rope and board
set out for further grounds. •
After much difficulty, as it Was ne-
cessary to use the board much in tra-
versing from one cake of ice to ano-
ther, they succeeded in finding some
nets about five miles out. In the
circumstances they were compelled to
work quickly, and owing to the fact
that they had only Cate bag with them
it was necessary to cut the floats and
sinkers off in order to lessen weight
and decrease bulk. They managed
after much difficulty to salvage four-
teen nets. 'While returning it was
often necessary to drag the bag be-
hind themselves with their rope while
crossing stretches of thin ice, as• oth-
erwise they wbuld inevitably have
gone through, In fact one of the
party did go through into the icy wa-
ters about four miles out and was
saved, luckily, by being able to reach
the board that was handed him. Fin-
ally at dusk,'all reached shore, tired
hungry and very thankful.
A meeting of"the fishermen who had
lost nets was called for three p. m.
Monday. A few unable to wait for
the appointed time, deemed it best to
call in the morning and were polite-
ly told to wait till all concerned were
present. This apparently, did not
meet with their. approval, resulting
in their going'honie. One of the
party'did take legal proceedings Mr
one net. The Magistrate and Crown
after hearing the plaintiffs evidence,
dismissed the charge and honourably
acquitted the gentlemen iizvolvod,
It is regrettable that such au inci-
dent shouldrhave come .to pass. We
nientioned that the majority of the
parties concerned expressed their ale,
prove] of .the gentlemanly way In whi
ch 'the meeting was cohdueted.
It' le appropriate to -extend to these
gentlemen our utmost Praise for their
bravery in venturing out on such a
hazardous expedition and, we congrat
'ulate them on their safe return.
