Four years ago a carload of
newsprint weighing 25 tons cost
$925 f.o.b. the mill in Quebec. Now
the newspapers have to pay
for
the same carload $3,250. This is
one of the reasons that it is nec-
essary for all newspapers to raise
subscription and advertising rate's
even in the fac eof reductions in
some lines of goods.
Manufacturers of biscuits and
candy have apparently become bo-
osters for the low cost of living,.
Reductions of approximately 10 pe
cent. are quoted in the quotations
to the retail trade on soda biscuits,
fancy biscuits and candy. These
changes are effective this week,
and are believed to be the fore-
runners of further price revisions.
Rice ihas dropped in value to the
pre-war level. Grades which sold
as \high as 25 cents are now obt-
ainable at three pounds for a qu-
arter. Last week the cost to the
consumer was 12'g cents. •

If men are determined not to
work they should not be fed," de-
clared J. Lockie Wilson, secretary
of the Ontario Vegetable Growers'
Association, Toronto, at the Ass-
ociation's annual meeting last we-
ek. • Mr. Wilson said he had seen
young men in Toronto lined up
four deep for three-quarters of 'a
block waiting to purchase tickets
for a picture show, while garden-
ers and farmers were pleading for
help. + To -day, he said., many of
these young fellows were stand-
ing in a bread line anxious to se-
cure tickets for free lunhces.
IN MEMORIAM
Of the late Fred Genttner who
died at Dashwood, Ont[
His hands were clasped upon his
Breast,.
We kissed his lovely brow.
And in our aching hearts we know
We have no father now.
In the cemletery gently sleeping,
Where the pine trees gently
wave. 1
Lies the one we love so clearly
In a cold and silent grave.
The years have gone we can't for -
