I HANDWORK FOR . . CHILDREN There ,is not. enough time given to constructive work, to :the pleasure of "making xllings"either to the hone or school. In a suggestive book, "Homo, School an(t Vact.tion," a mother writes, "A young child's capacity and skill grow rapidly. It is tt good plan after. he is four years to ruunage so thatee al- ways -can slave something v ible to show his father, for instance, at ,the end of the day, something made with his own hands." This wise mother adds another rea- son besides the pleasure this creative work gives. She says, "1f the mind alto' this age (four years) is let to - play all day, it rapidly grows averse to crdered application and submis- sion to authority. Now to be practical, what can child- ren make? I should like to show you the air -plane made'froni a match box by a little boy of !line, ' Air -planes arc naturally interesting to children this year. It is always wise to allow them to follow the life interests of the adult world whenever they appeal `to little people. But you, ask what can younger children make in the air •craft line? They can fold stiff paper into., darts and it is surprising to see how high tittle boys can hurl,,them. Then, too, they can make pin -wheels, a}ld while these do not fly they buzz through the air and afford'niuch amusement. Let the little people make many pin- wheels, large and small and of varied colors, using clothes -pias for handles if no older brother is at hand to whit - tie a stick. Encourage older and younger ' children to work together,- for selfcontrol and adaptability are gained through social intercourse. It, is needless to say that almost all children like to blow soap bubbles. How they fly! See whose will fly the highest! - Another source of interest to child- ren is the well known scrap book. Little people Iove to cut out pictures. They may collect them in a box at first, or put all the animals in one en,- velope, the toys in another and so on. When they can cut and arrange the pictures fairly well, help them to mount one sheet. After this practice fold a large sheet ,of paper and let then mount the four pages, then use a book. , To manage paper and scissors, make paste, select pictures, mount and press them with a blotting pad, are all acti- vities . which interest and instruct children. Scrapbooks illustrating Bible att'c1 other • favorite ' stories, children's poems," the different countries and-peo- ples ndpeo- ples of the world, and the various trades and occupations not only oc- cupy but educate little children. Such work is a good pastime for rainy days or. Sundays. When children have acquired skill in making sci:ap-books and have learned to select and arrange pictures, they should be allowed the privilege of sending their handwork to • some less fortunate children in our country or to some of the millions of little Allied orphans across the sea. A New Cure for Toothache. In medicine things sometimes hape. pen that professional men have diffi- culty in. explaining, according to Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell, who in his auto- biography tells the following story: A big fisherman came aboard my steamer one day and said that he had -toothache. His jaw was swollen, his mouth was hard to open, and the of- fending molar was visible within; but when I produced the forceps he pro- tested loudly that he would not have it touched for worlds. "Why, then, did you come to me?" I asked. "You are wasting my time." wanted you to charm her, doctor," he answered. "But, in19 dear friend, I do not know how to charm, and I don't think it would do the slightest good. Doctors are not alloo,'ed to do such things." He was 'evidently much put out, and had turned to go when I Said, "If you really think it would do any good, come along. You'll have to pay twen- ty-five cents exactly as if you had it pulled out." "Gladly, doctor. Please go ahead." He sat On the mil while I put one finger into his mouth, touehe(i ±hg !molar and repeated the most mystic nonsense. I could think of, "Abracad- abra Piddlywinkum Ulnslopoga;," and then jerked the finger out lest the patient' close his ponderous jaws. The fisherman took a turn round the -deck, uullGicl oUt the quarter and solemnly Landed it to'Ine, saying, "All the pain is gone. Many thank, doctor." - I .found thyself standing alone in ania2tiilont, twiddling a miserable shilling, and wondering how 1 came to make such a fool of myself, Basting threads, fif' of good twenty, can be saved and used again. One thorn of experience Is worth a Whole wilderness of warning. A great many people to -day are en- joying a new pleasure—the pleasure of lavish 'spending. They are people who have never had more than enough for what they found nec'rsary to life, but who, through the unprecedented conditions that accompanied and fol- lowed the war, have suddenly found themselves in easy circumstances, with money to spend in every pocket. They have spent it freely, and it is hard to find fault with them for buy- ing things that they have long desired and that they now think that they can afford. Nevertheless, the exorbitant demand they create for goods, com- bined with a lessened production at the factories, is one of the chief causes of the high cost of living that every- bne is complaining of. The joy of spending is of course keener than 'the joy of saving; but emotions are not necessarily laudable In proportion to their edge. It is hum- drum to save and amusing to throw money about carelessly; but there are two things to be remembered. The satisfaction we get from saving is permanent and tends to increase, whereas the satisfaction derived from spending is evanescent and almost sure to be repented of. Like the man who saves, the nation that saves is continually bettering its estate; the nation that wastes, like the man who wastes, is on the roackto poverty. The Islands of Spitzbergen—rich in coal, marble, and ores ---are styled a "No Man's Land." The wealth of the islands has been surveyed by the Bri- tish, but their claims have never been vigorously pushed. The islands, which are 24,000 square miles in extent, lying well within the Arctic Circle, yet only 400 miles from Norway and less than 1,300 miles from Britain, were discovered three centuries ago by Dutch navigators. Holland, Britain, Denmark, and Nor- way successively laid claims to them in the sixteenth and seventeenth cen- turies, but these tights have now ex- pired. The Supreme Council has re- cently awarded Spitzbergen to Nor- way, There aro 8,500,000,000,000 tons of coal in sight there. It is on the surface and needs little. mining.
