Chicken a Reptile?
"Pluck a chicken and you have a
reptile."
This remark of an anatomist was
meant to imply that the only very im-
portant difference between a reptile
and a bird lay in the fact that the for-
mer has scales, whereas the latter is
feathered. But feathers_ and scales
are but modifications of the same
Oleg.
The earliest birds on the earth were
very reptile -like and had teeth. In-
deed, there seems to be no doubt of
the fact that all modern birds are
originally descended from reptiles,
which may have started to acquire
lamer Cif flight by jumping from bough
to bough of trees.

Don't Neglect a Cold.
Don't spit or work in an over -heated
poen. 68 degrees Fahrenheit is quite
sufficient for any room, and 55 de-
grees if you are moving, around. Insist
on thd're being a slight -current in the
air in the room you occupy and proper
humidity.
Don't nine sprays, ar douches for
nese unless under the doctor's order
and instructions. Much more harm
than good results from the use of
sprays. If the spray is strong enough
to destroy the germs it would be more
likely to produce irritation in the
mucous membrane that will lower its
resisting powers and make it all the
more susceptible to germ activity.
Don't sneeze or cough ex;.rept into a
handkerchief ar a piece of cheesecloth.
These are frequent means of spread-
ing the germs of colds, influenza,
pneumonia, tuberculosis, measles and
whooping cough. '
Don't allow anyone else to sneeze
or cough towards you.
Don't allow any member of the
family who has an acute cold to come
in close contact with other members
of the household, or to use the same
eating and drinking utensils, towels,
etc.
Don't go tat any public muting if
you have a cold. Better stay at home
until your cold is better. You will
save time by doing so and probably
save others from eon'taacting your
disease.
1 Don't talk into anyone's face if yon
have a cold, -and don't, under any cir-
cunstancesshake hands with anyone
have while you an acute cold. Through
the frequent u.se of your handkerchief
your hands are sure to contain the
germs of this disease. In fact, the
race would -not suffer much by allow-
ing the hand -shaking sustain to
`gradually fall into -disuse. Have you
1 ever -catechised your hands and fing-
1ers as regards everything they have
1 been in contact with in the previous
; 24 hours?
Don't neglect or treat lightly a cold.
It may be the beginning of influenza:,
pneumonia, measles, tuberculosis,
whooping cough. The germs that
cause the common cold frequently
prepare the soil for other more dang-
erous germs -that we xaay be carry-
ing.
Hundreds of lives could- be saved
and thousands of cases of sicknees
prevented if people were as afraid of
colds as they are of smallpox.
Infant Mortality in Canada,
Fifteen years ago, a group of re-
formers built a new town on garden
city principles, thirty-four miles from
London, England, to prove, among
other things, that a union of town and
country life was possible and practic-
able and that, as a result, there would
be healthy children and the rate of in-
fant mortality would be reduced.
The time' of proof has come. "It is
an interesting fact to record," says
the Garden Cities and Town Planning
Magazine, that, during the eventful
and difficult year of 1918, the infant
mortality rate in Letchworth leas 110
per thousand births. This is the low-
est figure it has ever reached (hi
1917 it was 36) and is by no -means due
to a low birth rate."
A. garden city is not a mere residen-
tial community. Herein it differs frem
the garden suburb. It is intended to
be "a small tow:i, organized for me-
deru industry, of a size that makes
possible a full measure of roeial life,
surrounded by a permanent belt of
rural land." It does not aim to be a
bigger, but rather a hettee, town,
