During the past three year:: there has been eonri'lr.rable inveHtigatio» work in count -ellen with the treat- ment of American foulbrood and Dr. J, C. Hatzelran, of Ohio, introduce) a solution, composed of alcohol -for- analin,,which has been used by- many beekeepers to kill the spores and germs acusing American foul -brood in the drawn combs used by the bees. In the late winter ancl. early spring of 1924, prof, Jones, of the Bacteri- ology Department, conducted a num- ber of laboeatory experiments in con- nectionwith the treatment of Amer - lean foulbrood infected combs, Pre'. Jones used a number of well-known germicides and disinfectants, and his conclusions were that, so far as Amer- ican foulbrood was concerned, the spores were very Bard to kill. Prof. Jones feared that a eoiutton elf for- malin and water, as well as alcobol- formalin, gave positive results in laboratory tests and this former solu- tion was much more economical than alcohol-ferinalin. In the summer of 1924 Mr. G. la Jarvis, and in 1925 Mr. G. L. Jarvis and Mr, R. M. Pugh, of the Apicul- ture Department, carried out a num- ber of experiments in the apiary,, us- ing infected combs which had been treated with various strengths of for. matin and water and alcohol -forma- lin. Combless packages of bees, from. the south, were placed on these treated combs and results noted. This experiment will be conducted again in 1926. The results 'of the apiary experi- ments, thus far, tshow that there 15 a' very serious dateker when the bee- keeper saves inf d brood combs for treatment with either alcohol - formalin or formalin -water solutions. In some cases American foulbrood has reappeared in some of the colo- nies having treat comas.:nee Destroy All Infected Canibs. The ,recent fine rains have niad a bi gehangs on the growth or things in general. Some farmers are busy hauling in their fall, *cheat ,while at the lake the fall wheat is just being cut, Many •wheat fields this spring were be- ing filled in with barley where the wheat wee frosen out, The bar- ley crop is also about ready for the binder, although the 'season is a few weeks later this year, yet the harvest willsoon be. ended. There are a few places on our County roads that have proved rather dangerous to parties who are strange to these roads, we have reference to th^; jog in the Zurich Road,a mile east- of St. Joseph where %011ie people 'from. Stratford a few weeks ago, not knowing that the jog was in the road until too late when their ear turned •over and one lady having her area, fr- actured, while others were also in- jured besides damage of prop- erty. In view of these facts the De- partment, at present, is urging bee- keepers to destroy, by burning, all infected brood combs. The treatment of super combs, used ov >r an infected colony, is somewhat different, In these combs there are: no scales of American foul - brood present and our experiments show th.i: these combs can be effec- tively belted with a 20 per cent, formarin water treatment. fortunately with only its bumper somewhat dinged. We appreciate very much the white boards With the bls,e;,k diagrams giving the lay lay of the roads ahead in many of our highways, where 'similar pl- aces or bends in the road occur, and have every asurenee that if these Were erected at the said mentioned places it would give the travellieg public a chance to see the lay •of the ; road ahead. The results show that 5,003 .colonies were examined, 617 were found in- fected with American foulbrood and the contents of these infected colo- ies were destroyed by burning. This burning of over 66 colonies in these counties might appear to he a serious loss, but it must be remembered that a colony with American foulbrood soon ceases to produce a surplus of honey and, while it remains, it is a menace to all other ,healthy colonies in the vicinity. Once American foul, brood is cleaned out, thee the bee- keeper can go ahead and keep bees more profitably and more economic- ally. The.. Department hopes to bring other ooentiea into this elean-up cam- paign in 1926 and gradually widen the campaign until the whole pro - evince is included. To make the work as effective as possible, the Foul - brood Act has a quarantine measure which will prohibit a behkeeper mov- ing any but combless bees or inspect- ed healthy colonies into those coun- ties where a clean-up of American foulbrood has taken..place.—Aplcul- ture Department. 0.
