The .escape of urine from the navel
is a somewhat common abnormal
eondiLion met with, particularly In.
foals. It is termed .tecaiuioallr l?r r-
sistent or Previous UJrrychus;,and ,poly
ularly known as "Leahy Nava"
results from the persistence; or .ion
Closure at birth, of the urine duet:ol
the nayei„
Cause of tete Trouble,
During the early period of 11fe, be-
fore the time of birth, the hlagdert-is
ercloged forward by a tube or canal
,ternied the tilaohus, which extends
;,down and passes through the navel
opening in ate floor ,01 the belly, and
forms part of the navel cord and con-
nects .the bladder 4 with the outef
"Water Bag," 'or Allantoic Sac. At
birth, when the navel cord is severed,
this tube (the C)rachus) should then
become closed and obliterated. it,
however, sometimes happens that it
does not beciine completely closed
and still remains patent; hence the
"urine continue to escape and flog
through this pre -natal channel, in-
stead of being discharged through
the natural urine passage. Titis
condition of patency and discharge
of urine through this abnormal chane
rel keeps the skin surrounding the
navel in a moist and soiled condition,
and affords a favorable means ,for
contamination and the development
of disease germs. It therefore fre-
quently happens that this oondiiton
gives rise to, and is complicated
: with, other affections of the 'foal,
such as Joint I11, the causative
germs of n•hach.are afforded a ready
means of entrance, wiaile the leaky
condition of the navel persists to pre-
vent the early closing and drying ups
of the navel.

This condition As usually maeu-
restecl a few days after birth by the
wet and soiled condition of the skin
around the region of the navel. On
examination the urine is seen to ba
dribbling from the navel. In aoioe
cases only small quantities of u er.-
stay he escaping, while in other case

may be passed in a stream at each
